Thus it transforms. It is said to be an antidote. Since it is not abandoned, it is not reasonable. Thus it is. The elaboration of these four should be understood in their respective commentaries. Moreover, in the commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Arising, some aspects of the science of the Compendium of Topics are also used and explained. In the commentary on the Praise of the Earth, seventeen scriptural proofs and logical proofs are also employed. Thus, with eleven points, the establishment of the nature of the great Brahmanical All-Base has been explained. Second, explaining the afflicted mind, there are two: the mind of ultimate truth and the mind of conventional truth. The summary for the first is: Essence, characteristic, location, object, aspect, association, entry, cessation, definition, and proof, are explained through ten points. Among these ten, first, the essence is: the uninterrupted continuum of obscured and unspecified consciousness, which is an obscuration to attaining liberation and does not manifest simultaneously with the undefiled path, hence it is obscured, and since it is not established as either virtuous or non-virtuous, it is unspecified. Second, the characteristic is: the consciousness that knows the essence of the meaning of the All-Base and has the ability to be the dominant condition for mental consciousness, which is not fully pacified, or it is said to be that which only knows the meaning of the All-Base and always enters with the aspect of self-conceit until the noble path is attained. Because it only knows the meaning of the All-Base, it eliminates mental factors. The statement that it enters with the aspect of self-conceit eliminates the five sense consciousnesses and the All-Base. The statement that it is always until the noble path is attained eliminates the view of the perishable aggregate of the mind-ground and its associates, because their continuum is not interrupted in the five states of mindlessness. This is also stated in the Thirty Verses: "Consciousness is of the nature of self-mind." And in the Compendium of Topics: "What is mind? It is of the nature of always having a conceited mind and focuses on the All-Base consciousness." Thus it has been shown. Third, the location is the All-Base consciousness, because the afflicted mind arises dependent on the seed aspect of the All-Base. In the Thirty Verses it says: "Dwelling in it, it arises." Thus, this is said in terms of the location of the seed, and it is also the location of simultaneous arising, meaning that in whatever realm and ground the All-Base matures, the afflicted mind is also of that ground.

Returning to the topic. Fourth, the object is: taking the ālaya-vijñāna as its object. In the Thirty Verses, it says: "Taking that as its object is called 'mind'." So, what is the difference between the basis and the distinction? In the basis, the basis of the seed is the cause of arising, while the basis of arising is merely the same as the realm and the ground. The object is merely the aspect of the ālaya-vijñāna's maturation that serves as the basis for constant delusion about selflessness, so the difference is great. Fifth, the aspect is: looking inward at the ālaya-vijñāna and grasping it as self. So, at that time, does the contact of its retinue grasp it as self or not? If it is like the first statement, then there will be no difference from the view of the perishable collection. If it is like the second statement, then it contradicts the statement that mind and mental factors belong to the same cause. To this, Könshé says: It is held that contact does not grasp as self. The statement that mind and mental factors belong to the same aspect is not referring to the cause of the same aspect, but to the cause of the same object, so there is no contradiction. So, what is the difference between the afflicted mind grasping the ālaya-vijñāna as self and the view of the perishable collection grasping as self? In the commentary on the Ornament of the Sūtras, it says: There is a difference between the unclear and the clear. Some also think that there is a difference between grasping in the manner of merely knowing the meaning and grasping as self in the manner of grasping the distinction of the meaning. This seems to be what distinguishes the retinue of the afflicted mind grasping as self, and I think the former two cannot be distinguished. The assertion that contact does not grasp as self is also somewhat unreasonable, because the Thirty Verses say: The four uncommon retinues are the view of self, attachment to self, pride of self, and ignorance of self. Therefore, it is clear that the five common retinues also grasp as self. So, what is the difference? The afflicted mind is: grasping as self by taking only the ālaya-vijñāna as its object. The view of the perishable collection is grasping as self by taking all five aggregates as its object, this is the difference. Because the sūtras say that there are twenty views of the perishable collection, this is what all schools must commonly acknowledge. Sixth, the corresponding retinue. If all nine root retinues and their subsidiaries are included, there could be sixteen, which has already been explained. The Thirty Verses say: "It is always accompanied by the obscured and unspecified, the four afflictions. The view of self, etc."
