Its nature. In the Compendium of Topics, it only says, "Observe as the elements are, and how they are harmoniously combined," without further explanation. However, the function of the elements is to hold near use, while the function of the sense fields is to become the gateway for the arising of near use, which is their difference. Therefore, the nature of the eye sense field is: near use, eye consciousness, becomes the gateway for arising in the manner of a place. The term "eye consciousness" distinguishes it from other internal sense fields; the term "in the manner of a place" distinguishes it from external sense fields. The meaning of "as the elements are" is that it possesses both the near use that has not yet arisen and the seed of the eye. The meaning of "how harmoniously" is that the past and present near uses have already arisen, so they are not considered sense fields that open the door to arising. Like the nature of the eye sense field, the nature between the mind sense fields is also the same. The nature of the form sense field is: near use, eye consciousness, becomes the gateway for arising in the manner of an object. From this, the nature between the dharma sense fields should also be understood by analogy. Third, regarding the classification of bases, there are three points. First, regarding aggregates, the base of the form aggregate is the four great elements, and the two types of form produced by the four great elements. The four great elements are: earth, water, fire, and wind, their natures being respectively: in the manner of hardness, in the manner of moisture, in the manner of warmth, and in the manner of lightness and movement, becoming the object of body consciousness. Why are they called "great"? Because they are the basis of all resultant forms and pervade all of them. Second, regarding resultant forms, the Abhidharmakosha and the Madhyantavibhaga state that there are eleven: the five faculties, the five objects, and non-revealing form. The Compendium of Topics states that there are eleven, including the form of the dharma sense field. Regarding the nature of the five faculties, the Abhidharmakosha states, "It is the pure internal form that is the basis of eye consciousness," and so on. The Madhyantavibhaga states, "It is the pure internal form that is the object of form," and so on.

Thus it is said. In the Compendium of Topics, it is the same as the Treasury of Knowledge, except for the addition of "the four great elements as the cause." These five can also be divided into two types: the sense faculty with a basis and the equivalent sense faculty. The characteristic of form: that which is produced by the great elements, becoming the external object of the eye sense faculty. In both the upper and lower Abhidharma, it is considered that the eye sense faculty can see form. This also applies to the characteristic of touch. The classification of form, in the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: "Form is divided into two types and twenty." That is, the fundamental classification is into two types: the form of color and the form of shape. Color has four types, such as blue, and shape has eight types, such as long. It can also be divided into twenty types, namely: blue, yellow, white, red, long and short, square, round, high and low, flat, and non-flat, cloud and smoke, dust and particles, shadow, sunlight, light and darkness. In the Compendium of Topics, in addition to these, there are also subtle particles, coarse, the occasion for manifestation, representational, and the same color as space, totaling twenty-five types. Panchen (Panchen Erdeni) said: It is divided into three types: color, shape, and representational. Regarding sound, in the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: "Sound has eight types." That is, arising from the cause of the great elements with apprehension, divided into sentient and non-sentient beings; arising from the cause of the great elements without apprehension, also divided into sentient and non-sentient beings, totaling four types. Each of these is further divided into pleasant and unpleasant, totaling eight types. In the Compendium of Topics, it says: pleasant, unpleasant, and neither, three types; arising from the cause of the great elements with apprehension, without apprehension, and both, three types; worldly fame, taught by the accomplished, conceptually constructed, established by the noble, and established by the non-noble, totaling eleven types. Panchen (Panchen Erdeni) said: It is divided into three types: arising from the cause of the great elements with apprehension, without apprehension, and both. Regarding smell, in the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: Smell has four types, namely, fragrant smell, foul smell, equal smell, and unequal smell, four types. In the Compendium of Topics, it says: On top of the previous three types, add the two types of co-arisen and compound-arisen.
