The uninterrupted appearance of external containers is the Alaya consciousness, which constantly manifests the continuity of the world and containers, relying on the object taken. For example, just as a burning lamp has the continuity of the wick and oil entering internally, and light appearing externally, so too should the internal object taken and the external object be viewed as similar to the principle of Alaya consciousness. Because that object is difficult to completely determine even for worldly scholars, it is subtle. That object is constant and does not change occasionally. However, relying on the first moment, the sameness of consciousness will continue until the end of life. Alaya consciousness should be regarded as momentary in relation to the object, it exists as a continuity of moments, not as a single entity. Alaya consciousness in the desire realm should be described as having a small object of focus. In the form realm, it should be described as having a vast object of focus. In the formless realms of infinite space and infinite consciousness, it is an object of limitless focus. In nothingness, it is an object of subtle focus. In neither perception nor non-perception, it should be regarded as an object of extremely subtle focus. Thus it is said. Its meaning is stated in the Madhyantavibhāga: "The consciousness that appears as mind, and the consciousness that appears as object." In the Thirty Verses it says: "It is with what is taken and the place, consciousness and non-wisdom." In short, the object of Alaya has two aspects: the internal close object and the external container. The first is the habit of clinging to the nature imputed as self and phenomena, as well as the form of the sense organs with their locations, and the aggregate of names. The sense organs also focus on both their own and others' sense organs. The commentary on the Middle and Extremes states: "Appearing as sentient beings refers to the five sense organs that exist in one's own and others' continuums." This is in the Meaning Hidden.

What is the object of this? It is said to be seeds and eyes, etc., and forms, etc. That is, in the realm of form, in the formless realm, it is only the seed and the aggregate of name that are the objects. The way in which the container world is the object, whether large or small, etc., as explained by the ancient teachers, is unknowable. The Compendium says: Because the object is the container world that is not completely exhausted. Here, the meaning of saying that the container world and the senses are the object is also that the habitual tendencies of karma abide in the Alaya consciousness and arise, and the Alaya consciousness itself appears as the meaning of the container. The explanation of Bhara by Bharatri, quoted in the commentary, says: Space, earth, wind, sun, ocean, wind, and directions are the nature of the inner consciousness, appearing as if outside from a part. Thus it is said. Fourth, the aspect is that the Compendium does not mention the previous two objects, but only consciousness. The Thirty Verses say: On top of that, there is ignorance. The ignorance that is said is the meaning of having an unclear aspect. Regarding this, the ancient teachers have two types of appearance: appearing as variegated and not appearing as variegated. The first is that just as the five sense consciousnesses in the human world appear as earth and water, etc., the Alaya consciousness also appears in the same way. Similarly, to the five senses of the gods, the container world appears as a golden ground, to animals it appears as dark shadows, etc., to hell beings it appears as a ground of burning iron, etc., and to pretas it appears as pus and blood, etc. In this way, the Alaya consciousness of humans manifests all of these, and similarly, the Alaya consciousness of each being also manifests all of these. The second is that from the Alaya consciousness of humans, cliffs and dangerous places, etc., appear, to the Alaya consciousness of hell beings, only the ground of burning iron appears, and nothing else appears. Which of these two is better? Some people think that appearing as variegated is better, because the object and aspect are not completely exhausted, and the object is stable and clear. Fifth, the accompanying associates are only associated with the five omnipresent ones. The Compendium says: What is the establishment of turning in accordance with what is associated with it? Here, what is associated with the Alaya consciousness is the five omnipresent ones associated with the mind, attention and feeling.
