The definition is: In the Compendium on the Great Vehicle, it says, "How should one view the establishment of its definition? In brief, there are three aspects: establishing its own nature, establishing it as a cause, and establishing it as a result." Among these, the self-nature of the ālaya-vijñāna is: Whatever relies on the habitual imprints of all pervasively afflicted dharmas, possessing the ability to fully maintain the seeds, therefore it is the cause and condition for their arising. Among these, the definition as a cause is: In this way, the ālaya-vijñāna, being the possessor of all seeds, abides as the cause of those very pervasively afflicted dharmas. Among these, the establishment as a result is: The ālaya-vijñāna arises from the beginningless habitual imprints of those very pervasively afflicted dharmas. So it is said. To ascertain the meaning of this, there are three points: explaining the way of showing through the three definitions, explaining the self-nature of the definition, and ascertaining the signified object. The first point is: In the Don Sang, it says, "The three definitions are explained in sequence as the definition of the ālaya in general, the definition of the part of the seeds, and the definition of the part of the fully ripened." In the Shayd Jar, the first is when the ability to merely function as a seed has not yet arisen, and the second is when the ability has arisen. In the Compendium on the Great Vehicle itself, the generation of the habitual imprints of the entering consciousnesses is explained as the third definition, namely: "The dharmas arise from the habitual imprints of expression, from those very ones." The second point is: The definition that represents only the ālaya-vijñāna, the definition that represents it as fully ripened, and the definition that represents it as the possessor of all seeds, these three. The first is: How does the consciousness that has become the nature of fully ripened possess the ability to understand all seeds? In the Compendium on the Great Vehicle, it says, "In brief, the nature of the ālaya-vijñāna is the fully ripened consciousness, the possessor of all seeds." And in the Thirty Verses, it says, "That ālaya-vijñāna is the fully ripened, the possessor of all seeds." So it is said. Furthermore, it can also be represented by "the consciousness capable of being habituated," and it can also be represented by "understanding the nature of the meaning that is the basis of samsara and nirvana." The second is: The ālaya itself is propelled by previous contaminated karma and is a dharma of full ripening.

From the antidote that possesses (karma), the rain of Vipāka descends. Its Dharma is: Vipāka is the Dharma that is not prophesied, spoken by sentient beings, prophesied to arise later. Thus, it needs to be something that is unobscured and does not prophesy. As it says in the Abhidharmasamuccaya: If Vipāka also becomes virtuous or non-virtuous, then it will not be an antidote to all afflictions. Thus. It needs to be something that arises later from the prophecy that is the cause. If virtuous and non-virtuous actions are used in this life, and Vipāka also arises in this life, then there will be the fault of becoming many destinations in one continuum. Then, if it contradicts what is said in the Compendium of Topics, "actions that are experienced in the visible Dharma," then there is no fault. This is because, in general, the main part of Vipāka is feeling, so it refers to the feeling of pleasure and pain arising in the visible Dharma. Then, is that not the feeling of the wheel of the Ālayavijñāna? It is not. Because the feeling of the wheel of the Ālayavijñāna is only equanimity. Moreover, it needs to be said to be "sentient beings," that is, held by the continuum of sentient beings. Because, if the Vipāka result of virtuous and non-virtuous actions matures on an external support, then it will be overly common with other individuals, because the Vipāka result is non-common. Moreover, it needs to be held by one continuum. Because, if the Vipāka result of one's own actions matures on another continuum, then it will lead to the actions done being in vain and encountering what has not been done. Then, if some people die, will the Vipāka of the virtuous and non-virtuous actions done by the living people who are still alive mature on that dead person? Or will it not mature? If it matures, there will be the fault of the actions done being in vain and encountering what has not been done. If it does not mature, then it contradicts what is said in the sutras and treatises of the Great and Small Vehicles. The answer to this is that some ancient people say that it matures, so there is no later fault. There is also no first fault. Because the living people do not do actions to obtain their own Vipāka, but do actions to have that dead person obtain it, so it will not be in vain. Sentient beings in the Bardo know that they are living together with their former friends, etc., as if in a dream, so the reward for the virtuous actions done by the living people is like a dream.
