The collection is the formation imputed to the nominal designation of the distinctions of all phenomena. The collection of letters is the formation imputed to the letters, etc., which are the places of both of those. Individuality is the formation imputed to the state of not having attained the noble Dharma. This is considered to be substantially existent in the state of not having attained the noble Dharma, having been made a category within the unattained in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]. Do not mistake it for an ordinary person, because in the system of both the upper and lower Abhidharma, this belongs to the category of aggregates. Entering is the formation imputed to the uninterrupted continuity of cause and effect. Individually determined is the formation imputed to the difference between cause and effect. Concordant is the formation imputed to the conformity of cause and effect. Rapid is the formation imputed to the quick arising of cause and effect. Order is the formation imputed to the arising of cause and effect one by one. Time is the formation imputed to the continuous arising of cause and effect. Place is the formation imputed to the very existence of cause and effect in the directions such as the east. Number is the formation imputed to the individual differences of the formations. Collection is the formation imputed to the collection of the causes and conditions of cause and effect. Secondly, the view of substantial existence is: From the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: "Attainment and non-attainment, commonality, the equipoise of non-perception, and life, and the characteristics, and also the collection of names." Here, fourteen non-associated formations are taught. First, attainment is: the substance that makes either of the two cessations, whether belonging to one's own continuum or not included in the continuum, correspond to that person, like a rope that makes an ox carry a load. The divisions are: newly acquired attainment from what has not been attained or has been completely lost, and the attainment that has already been attained and is continuously present. The opposite of attainment is non-attainment, that is, when a Dharma that has attainment is not associated, establishing non-attainment as substantially existent is the tenet of the Vaibhāṣika school. To this, the Sautrāntika says: What is the reason for the existence of attainment as substantially existent? The Vaibhāṣika says: In the sutra, it says: These ten Dharmas of the non-learner arise,

If it is said that because each obtains and is fully endowed, one becomes a noble being who has completely abandoned the five branches. Then, even that which is not included in the continuum of sentient beings, and that which is included in the continuum of others, would also have the attainment of substantial existence. Because the sutra extensively states: "O monks, the wheel-turning king is endowed with the seven precious things." If it is said that there, "endowed" is spoken of as having the meaning of possessing. Then, what is the difference between the fact that the non-learning dharma is fully endowed, and "endowed" is substantially existent, and the fact that being endowed with the seven precious things, "endowed" is not substantially existent? Because for both of these, "endowed" as another substance is not determined from the aspect of its own nature, like form and so on, and it is also not determined from the aspect of its function, like the eye and so on, because they are the same. If it is said that the dharmas are obtained as the cause of arising. Then, the attainment of the two unconditioned cessations would not exist, and so on, is explained in detail in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, and at the end it says: "Thus, this 'endowed' and the 'not endowed' that prevents it are in every way imputed dharmas, and not substantial dharmas. The Vaibhashikas say: 'Both of these are only substantial.' Why? Because this is our tenet." Thus it is said. Third, co-nascent is similar to the previous homogeneity, except for the difference of whether or not it is substantially existent. As the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge says: "The substance called 'co-nascent' is the similarity of sentient beings, and in the treatises it is called 'homogeneity'." Thus it is said. The nature of the remaining ten is the same as before, except that "actions imputed to the state" is replaced by "substance of the state." Third, dispelling doubts about the system of reasoning: If it is said, how do the Sutra school of the logicians accept non-associated formations? They do not accept either the substantial existence of the Vaibhashikas or the imputed existence of the Sutra school of the Abhidharma. Because the Sutra school of the logicians believes that all conditioned phenomena are definitely the substance of meaning and consciousness. And the Mind-Only school believes that all conditioned phenomena are consciousness.
