because it cannot be said to be itself or other. Thus it is said. To this, scriptural proof is not valid, because if it is a nominally existent that is attributed to a part, it does not necessarily have to be a negation. Does the meaning of the logical proof mean that the object itself cannot be said to be itself or other? Or does it mean that the characteristic itself cannot be said to be itself or other? According to the first view, the ripening part of the all-ground consciousness would also become a negation, because from the seed part of the all-ground consciousness, the object itself cannot be said to be itself or other. According to the latter view, the sign is not established, because it is the general scriptural custom to establish the stage and the characteristic of the stage-possessor separately. Our own system is that any stage of conditioned phenomena does not possess the characteristics of form, mind, and mental factors, in order to sequentially eliminate the unconditioned and the other aggregates. Among the two, substantially existent and nominally existent, it is nominally existent, because it is necessary to make this appear as an object of consciousness through making the phenomenon of the stage-possessor itself an object of consciousness. However, it will not become unconditioned, because when the stage-possessor is produced by causes and conditions, the stage is also produced by it. Secondly, in this treatise, it is said that there are fourteen from attainment to the state of an ordinary being, and nine similar ones such as entering into absorption, making twenty-three in total. To this, the great scholar Panglo said that the number and order of these are merely what one wants to say, because it is seen that attainment is spoken of in various objects, as well as focusing on the aggregates, as well as focusing on the individual sense bases, as well as non-aggregation, as well as non-attainment, and so on. And in the Sutra Showing the Twelve Abodes, the Buddha taught one hundred non-associated formations, and in the Fifth Aggregate and the Treasury of Knowledge and its commentaries, the number and order are shown to be different from this. However, the early scholars considered the twenty-three that appear in this treatise to be definitely eight in number from the perspective of the basis of imputation, namely, attainment attributed to increase and decrease, the two absorptions and non-perception attributed to cessation, the life force attributed to existence, the similarity attributed to homogeneity, the four such as birth attributed to characteristics, the three collections attributed to terms, the state of an ordinary being attributed to non-attainment, and the

It is considered as nine concordant ones. The third is: attainment and two kinds of absorption, non-perception and life are of the same kind, four characteristics and three such as name, ordinary beings enter and are separately determined, favorable conditions are related to speed and order of time, place and number and collection. Fourthly, attainment is the formation imputed to the state of increase and decrease of the three, such as virtue. If divided, generally there are attainment, newly acquired things that did not exist before, and permanent ones, which are three in terms of nomenclature. If the state of decrease, how does it become attainment? Answer: When increasing, it possesses great things, and when decreasing, it possesses small things, so there is no fault, so it is said in the commentary. Non-perceptual absorption is the formation imputed to the state where the six aggregates and retinues of the third dhyana, which is free from desire, and the fourth, which is not free from desire, are stopped by taking the perception of definitely emerging from samsara as a guide. Cessation absorption is the formation imputed to the state where the seven aggregates and retinues are stopped by taking the perception of abiding in peace as a guide. Non-perceptual being is the formation imputed to the state where the six aggregates and retinues of the continuum of the non-perceptual gods are stopped. The life faculty is the formation imputed to the definite time of abiding, thrown by previous karma, as the same kind. The similar kind is the formation imputed to the fact that the bodies of those sentient beings are similar in that particular kind of sentient beings. Birth is the formation imputed to the new arising of formations that did not exist before, as the same kind. Aging is the formation imputed to the fact that the continuum of formations changes to another, as the same kind. Abiding is the formation imputed to the fact that the continuum of formations does not perish, as the same kind. Impermanence itself is the formation imputed to the fact that the continuum of formations perishes, as the same kind. According to the view of this treatise, the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena are also only established on conditioned phenomena that are included in the continuum of sentient beings, and impermanence is not meant to be momentary destruction, but rather continuous destruction. The collection of names is the formation imputed to the essential words of phenomena. Word
