Because it arises in the retinue of all minds, it is called the many mental grounds. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: Feeling and mind, perception and intention, contact and intelligence, memory, attention and faith, and samadhi, in all minds. Thus it is said. Among the eleven virtuous qualities, the other ten except for non-ignorance arise in all virtuous minds, so it is called the many virtuous grounds. Faith and mindfulness, very gentle, equanimity, shame, knowing shame, and having shame, the two roots, non-harming and other, diligence always arise in virtue. Thus it is said. Among the root afflictions, ignorance and the five of the lower ten near afflictions, such as drowsiness, are six, because they arise in all afflicted minds, so they are called the many afflicted grounds. Ignorance, recklessness, laziness, disbelief, drowsiness and agitation, always arise in afflicted minds. Thus it is said. The first two of the lower ten arise in all non-virtuous minds, so they are called the many non-virtuous grounds. In non-virtue, there is no shame and no embarrassment. Thus it is said. The first ten near afflictions are: because they are only associated with ignorance, and are only to be abandoned by meditation, and are only of the nature of mind, they are called the many grounds of minor afflictions. Anger and resentment, deceit and fraud, jealousy, miserliness, harm and flattery, arrogance and violence are the grounds of minor afflictions. Thus it is said. Now, if it is thought that this contradicts what is said in the Compendium as belonging to the category of anger, etc., because if it is only associated with ignorance, then it does not need to be associated with anger, etc. This school believes that the dharmas belonging to the six categories are only separate entities, so they are not considered to be part of other parts. Because if it is a component, then it is not a different entity from the thing with components, so it is not counted here. For example, non-ignorance is part of wisdom, so it is not counted separately. It is necessary to know how to explain without mixing the views of each school. Second, the category of the uncertain is: ignorance and the other four root afflictions other than views, and the four variable afflictions, a total of eight. Thus, there are forty-six mental events that are real entities. Non-ignorance and the view among the root afflictions, and the lower ten near afflictions

Among them, not understanding and the other three belong to the wisdom of afflictions, so they are included in the category of wisdom. Forgetfulness belongs to the afflicted mindfulness, so it is included in the category of mindfulness. Distraction belongs to the afflicted concentration, so it is included in the category of concentration. Therefore, when these arise in the retinue of any primary consciousness, they belong to the category of many mental factors, which is the key meaning. Here, the order is also universally applicable, so first the many mental factors are shown. Then, because it is worthy of offering, the many virtuous mental factors are shown. Then, because it pervades all afflictions, the many afflicted mental factors are shown. Then, because it is the chief of afflictions, the many non-virtuous mental factors are shown. Then, because it is a minor affliction, the minor afflicted mental factors are shown. Thus, after showing the definite categories, the indefinite categories are shown below, so the order is well arranged and it is also very helpful to the order of the previous Compendium of Topics. Second, regarding what arises in the retinue of what, depending on the realms and grounds, there are two types: those dominated by the desire realm and those dominated by the higher realms. In the first, among the three types of minds—virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral—in the retinue of a virtuous mind, the first two sets of ten factors, investigation and analysis, these twenty-two necessarily arise. In some cases, when there is regret for having done something non-virtuous or regret for not having done something virtuous, adding regret results in twenty-three. That is to say: For the virtuous mind of the desire realm, because it has investigation and analysis, there are twenty-two mental factors; in some cases, regret is added. A non-virtuous mind that is not mixed with other afflictions, but is only associated with ignorance, has the first ten factors, six afflicted mental factors, two non-virtuous mental factors, investigation and analysis, for a total of twenty. When associated with any of the latter three views, the same twenty arise. If one thinks that adding a view would make it twenty-one, that is not the case, because it belongs to the category of wisdom among the many mental factors. Also, a non-virtuous mind that is associated with any of the four—desire, anger, pride, or doubt—and that is associated with any of the first ten of the near afflictions, such as anger, and that has regret for not having done something non-virtuous or regret for having done something virtuous, and
