is the basis for the following items, and the other three are the same as the first two in terms of their objects, so they are explained after them. Virtue is worthy of offering, so it is explained first before the afflictions. The root afflictions are the basis for the near afflictions, and the near afflictions are the objects of the root afflictions, so they are explained in order after the root afflictions. The four variables are applicable to all three, virtue and so on, so they are explained after them. It is said that Panglo thought that this was done out of a desire to express, and that the order was not so fixed. Although he thought so, looking at the way the order arises, the former seems very reasonable. The ninth general point is: it depends on the mind and arises in reliance on the mind, so it is called a mental event. If the two are co-existent cause and effect, and the mind also arises from the mental event, then the word and meaning are not reasonable. In response to this, some say that the mind has a continuity, arising from its own similar previous moment, so it does not depend on the mental event; the mental event has no continuity, not arising from its own similar previous moment, so it depends on the mind. This is not reasonable, because the mental event has no continuity, which is the view of those who hold that the mind and mental event are different entities, but in the view of the same entity, the mind and mental event have the same continuity. If there is no continuity of the later arising from the similar previous moment for faith and wisdom, etc., then the later will not become stronger from the habituation of the similar previous continuity, which is too extreme. Therefore, the former answer is only in terms of the literal explanation, and can be explained in both cases. Just as when explaining an elephant as having a hand, it must be explained from the point of view of having a hand, and this explanation can be applied to all objects that have a hand. However, if it cannot cover everything, it is necessary to understand the classification of the three cases of expressible, expressed, and non-expressible. Or, like a wave of water, it is a change of mind, so it is called a mental event. The tenth general point is: the five omnipresent ones. The nature of feeling and perception has already been explained. The nature of intention is the mental event that moves the mind towards the object. Attention is the mental event that causes the mind to engage with the object. The difference between this and intention is like the king rising from his seat and being taken to the garden. Contact is the mental event that, when the three are combined, completely cuts off the alteration of the object.

Arising. The five certainties are: Desire is the mental factor of wanting to possess the desired object. Faith is the mental factor of grasping the determined object as it is determined. Mindfulness is the mental factor of the mind not forgetting the familiar object. Samadhi is the mental factor of one-pointedness on the object of investigation. Wisdom is the mental factor of thoroughly distinguishing the dharmas of the investigated objects. Among the eleven virtuous minds, faith is the mental factor of manifest belief, joy, or desire towards a special object. Shame is the mental factor of being ashamed of one's own misdeeds. Embarrassment is the mental factor of being ashamed of the misdeeds of others. Non-attachment is the mental factor of not being attached to existence and the resources of existence. Non-hatred is the mental factor of not being tormented by the root dharmas of all afflictions. Non-ignorance is the mental factor of knowing the reality and individually realizing it through the doors of innate and acquired knowledge. Diligence is the mental factor of rejoicing in virtue. Pliancy is the mental factor of making body and mind serviceable by cutting off the continuum of suffering of body and mind. Conscientiousness is the mental factor of abiding in the absence of the three poisons and with diligence, cultivating virtuous dharmas, and protecting the mind from contaminated dharmas. Equanimity is the mental factor of abiding in the absence of the three poisons and with diligence, the mind abiding in peace. Non-harming is the mental factor of compassion, belonging to the category of non-hatred. Among the six root afflictions, greed is attachment to the three realms. Anger is the mental factor of being tormented by the root dharmas of all afflictions. Pride is the mental factor of the mind being conceited based on the view of self. Ignorance is the mental factor of not knowing the three realms. Doubt is the mental factor of hesitating about the truths. These two have the distinction of being afflicted and non-afflicted. Here, it refers to the afflicted, and ignorance has a non-afflicted nature, which is agreed upon by all four philosophical schools. Doubt has a non-afflicted nature, and there is also concealment in the continuum of the Hearer Arhat.
