are all included in these. Furthermore, mental factors (citta-ja) are those that are in accordance with the mind through the fivefold congruence. In the "Differentiation of the Five Aggregates," it says: What are the phenomena that arise from the mind? Answer: All those phenomena that are in accordance with the mind are included in this. The fivefold congruence is: the same basis, the same object, the same aspect, the same time, and the same substance. First, both mind and mental factors rely on the same sense faculty as their basis. Second, they focus on an object, such as a form. Third, if the mind has a blue aspect, then the mental factors that are in accordance with it also have a blue aspect. Fourth, if the mind is present, then the feelings and so on that are in accordance with it are also present. Fifth, the number of substances is definitely the same, for example, in the retinue of one mind, there are no two substances like the mental factor of feeling. Second, why is it necessary to mention all five congruences? If only the object is said to be the same, then other consciousnesses and mental consciousness would also become mind and mental factors. If only the object and aspect are said to be the same, then the two eye consciousnesses of two people looking at the same moon would also become mind and mental factors. If only the object, aspect, and basis are said to be the same, then the two earlier and later eye consciousnesses with the same meaning would also become mind and mental factors. Finally, saying that the substance is the same is to eliminate the grasping of multiple substances when the eye consciousness and so on grasp variegated colors. The third part has two sections: debate and answer. The first part is: If only the nature and the particularities of things are recognized separately, then the aspects of mind and mental factors will become dissimilar. If this is admitted, it contradicts the statement in the "Extensive Explanation" that the aspects are the same. If both grasp both, then the "Commentary on the Middle and the Extremes" says: These also, because of the same place, object, time, and substance, would be no different from consciousness, therefore the aspects being the same is not correct. The second part includes: refuting the unreasonable and stating the reasonable. The first part has four points: distinguishing by pervasion and non-pervasion, distinguishing by subsequent cognition, distinguishing by self-power and other-power, and refuting distinguishing by tenets. The first point is: Some Kashmiri Dharma-loving scholars say that the mind grasps only the nature of things, and grasping the particularities is non-pervasive, therefore the aspects are not the same. Mental factors

It is unreasonable to say that "because clinging to the particular, it pervades clinging to the mere meaning, so they are the same." If that were the case, it would mean that mental factors are the same in aspect as the mind, and the mind is not the same in aspect as the mental factors. Because it is necessary to resolve the doubt of whether mental factors are the same or not the same in aspect as the mind, but that doubt has not yet been resolved. If it is thought that mental factors that do not necessarily arise as one's own retinue are not the same in aspect, then it must be admitted that the mind and the five omnipresent factors are the same in all aspects. Second, it is also unreasonable to say that the yellow-robed ones think that since both appear to both, they are the same in aspect, and that the ways of clinging to the essence and the particular are different, or that, according to the Mind-Only school, the ways of imputing to the essence and the particular are different, so they say that the aspects are not the same. Because for non-conceptual mental factors, there is no clinging or imputation, therefore the meaning of not being the same in aspect becomes an untenable fault. Third, there are four: the fundamental pledge, the order of refutation and response to it, the refutation of other ways of establishing by force, and the refutation of cause and effect at the same time. First, the teacher Aban said that although both grasp both, the mind grasps the mere meaning by its own power, because after the mind arises, grasping the mere meaning is its nature or dharma. Grasping the particular of the meaning is by the power of others, because it grasps by the power of being accompanied by mental factors. Mental factors grasp the particular by their own power, and grasping the mere meaning is by the power of others, and this can be applied in the same way. To establish this, there are two types: scriptural and logical. First, the scriptural proof is that the sutra says, "This mind has been transformed into the very nature of complete affliction of desire for a long time." And here it also says, "Because it is related to the goodness of its own nature, it is goodness, etc." In the Thirty Verses, it says, "It is always accompanied by the four afflictions that are obscured and not taught in the scriptures." Second, the logical proof is that the eye consciousness grasps the mere meaning of form by its own power, because that is its nature or habit. The faith, etc., of its retinue grasps the essence of form by the power of others, because that is its
