Because there are two things: the Dharma of afflictions to be abandoned and the Dharma of purification to be cultivated. If these two are not separated and taught in common, then the first two places are the aggregates, elements, and sources, and the arising of the twenty-two faculties, corresponding factors, actions, and conditioned Dharmas, because they are the common Dharma of afflictions and purification. When teaching separately, what is completely afflicted is: What is completely afflicted? That is, the beings of the five realms. Where is it afflicted? That is, in the vessel world. How is it afflicted? That is, in the manner of the twelve links of dependent origination and the four births, which is shown by the third place. What is completely afflicted by? That is, by contaminated actions and afflictions, which is shown by the fourth and fifth places. In the Dharma of purification, what is purified? That is, the eight stages of entering the stream. Where is it purified? That is, in the three desires, the last of the three is: In three places, yes. How is it purified? That is, in the manner of having hearing and thought, one should diligently apply oneself to meditation. This is shown by the sixth place. What is purified by? That is, by uncontaminated wisdom and the absorption of its mind, which is shown by the seventh and eighth places. This is their view. However, if it is combined with the way of traversing the three vehicles, it is as follows: In general, according to the view of the Vaibhashikas, in the manner of "having hearing and thought, one should diligently apply oneself to meditation," the two paths of seeing and cultivating are generated at the time of "seeing and becoming familiar with the truth." And it is said that "abandoning afflictions," at this time, after abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the afflictions to be abandoned by the path of cultivation, one obtains the path of no more learning, which is the common point of the way of traversing the three vehicles. And showing these differences is definitely in the eight places, that is: 1. The difference of the object of focus; 2. The difference of the obscurations to be abandoned; 3. The difference of the person who traverses; 4. The difference of the way of traversing; 5. The difference of the practice; 6. The difference of the time of obtaining the result; 7. The difference of the qualities of the obtained result. Among the seven, the first is: The object of focus of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is only to know that the three realms, the vessel and sentient beings, are suffering, and thus they obtain liberation, which is shown by the third place. The Mahayana practitioners, on top of that, also have the cause of the wisdom of knowing as many as there are, the detailed classification of the aggregates, elements, and sources...

It is necessary to understand the differences, which are shown by the first three positions. Secondly, the defiled actions and afflictions that Hearers and Solitary Buddhas need to abandon, and the attainment of Bodhi by merely abandoning these, are shown by the fourth and fifth positions. To attain Bodhi in the Mahayana, one must also abandon non-afflictive ignorance, which is shown by the power of the aggregates, elements, and sources, or directly shown by praise. Thirdly, the Mahayana and Self-born Buddhas, in the stage of the path of accumulation, complete all accumulations, and in the last existence, the realizations from the heat stage to the stage of no more learning are based on the fourth dhyana, and can be accomplished in one seat, so there is no classification of stream-enterers. Hearers cannot do this, so there is a classification of stream-enterers, which is shown by showing the person in the sixth position. Fourthly, relying on breathing in and out and meditating on impurity, one first generates shamatha, and then generates vipassana and mindfulness, thereby perfecting the accumulations, which is the common path of the three vehicles. The difference between purity and impurity is that after Hearers attain the path of seeing, they still take fourteen births in the desire realm, sixteen births in the form realm, and four births in the formless realm, and so on. Solitary Buddhas like rhinos and Mahayana practitioners generate from the heat stage to the stage of no more learning in one seat, so after attaining the path of seeing, there is no difference in taking births like that. This is shown by showing the path in the sixth position. Fifthly, the body is separated from bustle, and the mind is separated from conceptual thoughts, that is, two separations. Also, being content with just meager alms, dwellings, and clothes, and the practice of enjoying abandonment and meditation, are the common practices of the three vehicles. This is stated in the sixth position: "Having two separations, not knowing contentment." On top of that, Mahayana practitioners also please the Buddhas in three countless kalpas, give away heads, hands, and feet, and perfect the ten perfections such as generosity. One hundred kalpas before becoming a Buddha, the Bodhisattva becomes a determiner, becoming a non-returning Bodhisattva.
