They are divided into three: upper, middle, and lower. In the Root Sutra, these terms are mentioned during the occasions of the summer retreat, the end of the retreat, and the solidifying, and when asking about a monk's seniority, how long is the winter? Four months. Which four? The first month of winter, the middle month, the last month, and the first month of spring. Also, in the Extensive Commentary, "From the fifteenth day of the last autumn month to the fifteenth day of the middle winter month, the two months are..." and similarly, the term is mentioned in the Four Commentaries. The third is: dividing into five seasons: winter, spring, summer, short summer, and long summer. Winter and spring each have four months, summer has one month, short summer has one day, and long summer has three months plus one day. This is mentioned in the Four Vinayas, the Karma Shatam, and the occasions in the Root Sutra where the time of monks is discussed. The fourth is: dividing into six seasons: winter, late winter, spring, early summer, summer, and autumn, each of which is divided into two months. In the Root Sutra, it should not be less than one day. In the Extensive Commentary, "Half of the months of the seasons are left out." The Extensive Commentary says: "From the fifteenth day of the last autumn month to the fifteenth day of the middle winter month, the two months are the winter season. From the fifteenth day of the middle winter month to the fifteenth day of the first spring month, the two months are the late winter season. From the fifteenth day of the first spring month to the fifteenth day of the last spring month, the two months are the spring season. From the fifteenth day of the last spring month to the fifteenth day of the middle summer month, the two months are the early summer season. From the fifteenth day of the middle summer month to the fifteenth day of the first autumn month, the two months are the summer season. From the fifteenth day of the first autumn month to the fifteenth day of the last autumn month, the two months are the autumn season." Secondly, one might wonder, what is the need for such a variety of seasonal divisions? The need for dividing into three seasons is to identify the cloth in the monastic robes. Lost items in monastic robes are divided into lost items in monastic robes and lost items in inferior monastic robes. The latter is for others to enjoy for four months. In the Root Sutra, it is said: "For those used in seasons, these two will change."

It is said thus. The necessity of dividing into four seasons is: to make it easy to understand by conforming to worldly people and common terms. Because in the world there are distinctions of superior, middling, and inferior terms. The necessity of dividing into five parts is to recognize that the short summer is like death. Its necessity is also to know that if it exceeds this time, the acceptance of summer will not be established. Regarding this recognition, in the Phran 'grel it is said that the sixteenth day of the small summer month is the short summer. When asking a monk's age, the time of the short summer is one day and night. What is that? It is the day and night of the first day of the first autumn month. These two recognitions, the first is with the waxing moon as the forerunner, and the latter is with the waning moon as the forerunner, so they are not contradictory and have the same meaning. The necessity of dividing into six parts is to recognize the fourteenth-day Uposatha, which is clear in the root commentary itself. The third has three: from where to start counting a day, from where to start counting a month, and from where to start counting a year. First, in general, there are three kinds of days: Tithi (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思), day and night, and zodiacal day. The first is, one part of the thirty parts into which the waxing and waning of the moon are divided, or the duration for which the seven planets are used for Tithi The second is, from dawn to the time before dawn the next day. The third is, Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer, Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio, Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces. One of the thirty parts of the time the sun stays in those zodiac signs. How many such days occur each year? If here, roughly calculating by removing the days that are not enough for one day from two months each, then there are three hundred and seventy-one Tithi (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) days, three hundred and sixty-five day and night days, and three hundred and sixty zodiacal days. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: Including the days that are not enough for one day, twelve months make a year. In that way, the beginning of the Tithi (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) day must be counted from the beginning of the use of the seven planets for Tithi (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思), so it is impossible to determine whether it occurs in the early or late part of the day or night. The beginning of the day and night is counted from dawn. The beginning of the zodiacal day must be counted from the first of the thirty parts of the sun's use of any one of the twelve zodiac signs, so it is also impossible to determine where it occurs. The second is, dividing into four seasons, starting from the first day of the waxing moon
