Because it contains the essence, it is called "Treasure." The containment here does not mean containing all words and sentences, but because it contains the essence of meaning, it is called that way. Just as the room containing the precious wealth of the king is called the king's treasury. Or, because this is the place where the seven Abhidharma treatises arise, it is also called "Treasure." Just as the place where the sword arises is the scabbard, so the sword is also called the scabbard. The wise say that because it is not common in the world, the treasure taken from the king's treasury is used as a metaphor for "Treasure." Although it is said that way, the former is more common. Because it is common in the world to say "bring the scabbard" when one wants to take the sword with the scabbard. Fourth, regarding the treatises, there are seven aspects: nature, definition, classification, name, function, necessity of composing, and cause of composing. First, in general, all four schools of debaters agree that what appears as a collection of names, sentences, and letters. The special feature is that the Vaibhashika school believes that the combination of names, sentences, and letters is the object taken by consciousness, non-corresponding formations, and a different entity from the other four aggregates. Because they can truly express meaning. That is to say, after the ear hears the self-characteristic sound of expression, the image of names, sentences, and letters will appear in the consciousness, and the meaning will be truly understood from it. The self-characteristic sound of expression and the image of letters are both imputed to the treatises, and the reason for imputation is because they are understood through meaning. The necessity of imputation is to understand the meaning, it is necessary to listen to the self-characteristic sound of expression with the ears and look at the letters with the eyes. The hindrance to reality is because they are not indicators of true meaning. The view of the Sutra school is that some people think that the general sound that appears to be understood is the object, which is not the view of the Abhidharma Sutra school, because that is not the form aggregate. Therefore, this school says that the self-characteristic sound of expression is the form aggregate. However, the Sautrantika school of epistemology believes that the treatises are not real as before, which is the difference. The reason for this is that the treatises are considered to be true expressions.

Because of clinging to the actual objects of expression, the general meanings and general sounds, and considering the objects of expression, the meanings and sounds, as self-characterized. Moreover, if the author's name, words, and letters are not substantially established, then it is contradictory for the treatise composed by them to be substantially established. The Mind-Only school has four distinct characteristics: the characteristic of the essence is the consciousness that appears as an aggregate of names, words, and letters in the mind; the characteristic of the aspect is that it exists in verses or prose; the characteristic of the function is that it causes the intelligence of those to be tamed to increase more and more, and it enables each to understand the meaning they want to understand; the characteristic of the lineage is that it is encompassed by the lineage of the listener. So, how is it composed by the author and how is it explained by the speaker? The author composes the consciousness that appears to him, and the speaker also explains the consciousness that appears to him, so the listener understands his own consciousness. As it says in the Twenty Verses: "By the power of one on one, consciousnesses transform each other." And, "By the mental faculty of writing and so on, like memory fading and other transformations." Second, etymology: The Sanskrit word for treatise is Śāstra. Śāsana means to tame, that is, to tame the mindstream of those to be tamed, making them possess the three trainings. Tāra means to liberate or protect, that is, to protect from the suffering of bad migrations and existence. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Taming all the enemies of afflictions, protecting from bad migrations and existence, because of the merit of taming and protecting, it is called a treatise; these two are not found in other schools." Third, detailed classification: In the Determination of Categories, from the perspective of names, it is divided into nine types, and from the perspective of substances, it is divided into three types. The first is: "Meaningless, meaning-reversed, and meaning-possessing, evil, deceitful, without compassion, abandoning suffering, diligently engaging in listening, debating, and practicing, treatises are considered to be without six and possessing three virtues." The second is: These nine types of treatises also include the secret words of the Vedas of the outsiders passed down from ear to ear, treatises that debate with Buddhists, and treatises that are in accordance with the attainment of liberation by Buddhists. Fourth, names: Because it tames the mindstream of the disciples.
