They are called "Hud," splitting like utpala flowers, with blue skin splitting into five or six petals; splitting like lotus flowers, red, splitting into ten petals or more; splitting like lotus flowers, large and extremely red, splitting into a hundred petals or more. Some are reborn as butchers of cattle in Rajagriha (now Rajgir), crying with the sound of collapsing houses and rising into the sky; some are reborn as students of butchers of cattle, with crows and other birds pecking at foul-smelling piles of bones; some are reborn as prostitutes, with crows and other birds pecking at piles of ashes and nostrils; some are reborn as fishermen, with their bodies wrapped in iron; some are deceitful measurers, with testicles as large as earthenware pots, as stated in the sutras. Or they experience as described in the Avadana of Geden Sung. Thus, hell has immeasurable suffering. In the Letter to a Friend, it says: "What is the suffering of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in one day here? Compared to the smallest suffering of hell, one cannot even mention it, let alone endure it." Thus it is said. For details, refer to the Saddharma Smṛtyupasthāna Sutra and others. As for pretas, those with external obscurations regarding food and drink are tormented by hunger and thirst, their bodies and mouths parched, running to springs and other places, but they are guarded by those wielding weapons, and even water appears as pus and blood. As for those with internal obscurations, as it says in the sutra: "Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as mountains, tormented by hunger, unable to find even a little bit of impure matter." It also says: "Some seek the pus of ripe boils." As for the obscurations of food and drink themselves, everything they eat and drink is burned by chains of flames; they eat garbage, able to eat feces, urine, and foul-smelling things, able to eat their own flesh, but unable to eat offered food. Again, in the Saddharma Smṛtyupasthāna Sutra, it is said: "Bent stomachs, mouths as thin as needles, eating feces, eating carrion, eating offerings, eating alms, living by drinking water, eating saliva, eating chains, eating blood, eating meat, eating smoke, acting violently, looking for opportunities, living underground, possessing great power, bodies burning at night, like human skin, living between the desire realm and the form realm, Yama's club, eating children, Brahma demons eating the husks of grain, eating impure things, living on the road, eating in large quantities, eating torches, eating poison, etc."

Residing in desolate places, residing in cemeteries and on trees, residing at crossroads, the retinue of demons numbers thirty-six, each experiencing suffering. Animals, the large swallow the small to eat, and then the small bore into the bodies of the large to eat, birds with beaks eat wild animals, etc., and the nagas are burned daily by grit until flesh and bone, and eaten by garudas. It is said that taking refuge in the Three Jewels averts these. Those scattered about are tormented by being killed involuntarily, beaten, and subjected to forced labor, etc. As it says in "Letter to a Friend": Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, flesh, and skin. Others, powerless, are kicked, struck with hands, and driven by being stabbed with whips and iron hooks. And so on. Humans suffer from hunger and thirst, heat and cold, lack of desire, harm from sentient and non-sentient beings, bad food, walking, searching, anger, fatigue, lying down, darkness, etc., and are obscured by exhaustion, birth, etc. The gods of the desire realm are: The color of the body becomes unpleasant, dislike for one's seat, flower garlands wither, clothes become stained, and sweat appears on the body that was not there before, which is called the omen of death, the five omens of death that transfer from the higher realms. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Treasury of Near Death Omens, it says that unpleasant sounds come from ornaments and clothes, the light diminishes, drops of bathwater cling to the body, the mind cannot focus on one place, the eyes open and close, these five can be averted. The previous five cannot be averted. It is said that the goddesses suffer from seeing other gods enjoying themselves, and the powerful gods feel ashamed when they see the weak gods. In the latter two cases, when the gods fight with the asuras, there is strife, they are killed by being beheaded, or threatened by being driven away. These are because the gods desire the daughters of the asuras, and the asuras desire the nectar of the gods, so they are jealous of each other. The asuras take weapons made of gold, silver, crystal, agate, and lapis lazuli from the hollows of Mount Meru, and put on armor. When they prepare to depart, the battle robes of the army shake the throne of Indra, so Indra knows that war is coming. If they are defeated in battle with the nagas, they return to their own abodes. If the white nagas are defeated, they enter the water.
