Firstly, non-associated formations, where "non-associated" excludes association, and "formations" excludes the other four aggregates and the unconditioned. Secondly, the divisions: Here (in this treatise) fourteen are mentioned, and in the upper Abhidharma (referring to the Abhidharma-samuccaya) twenty-three are mentioned. The word "also" includes the nine similar (non-associated formations) mentioned in the upper Abhidharma, as well as the verse in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: "As its measure is great, so it is also full, non-eating is like debt." And in the Karma-siddhiprakarana, it says: "The Mahasanghika school believes that the dharma of non-eating produces fruit." And the disputes of the Sangha, etc. Thirdly, the proof of their substantial existence: In general, the basis of all five divisions is substantially existent, therefore the basis of non-associated formations must also be substantially existent. Specifically, attainment is substantially existent, because if the substance that causes a person to possess that dharma does not exist, then he will lose that dharma. Non-attainment is substantially existent, because if the substance that prevents a person from possessing that dharma to be abandoned does not exist, then he will possess that dharma. And so on, according to their respective functions, it should be known that they are substantially existent. In the case of "attainment" and "non-attainment," there are six aspects to examine the boundaries of attainment and non-attainment: definition, classification, which dharma it belongs to, the proof of its substantial existence, refuting it and establishing the teacher's own system, and summarizing and presenting the views of the Vaibhashikas. First, the definition: The non-associated formation that substantially exists and causes the dharma to be attained to be associated with a person, and the non-associated formation that substantially exists and becomes an obstacle to the association of that dharma, are these two in order. Second, the classification: Attainment is divided into five types: such as the attainment of the first moment of the uncontaminated, which is newly attained from never having been attained; such as the attainment of the vows of meditative concentration, which is the first moment of attaining again after having been lost, which is newly attained from a state of loss, these are two; the second moment onwards of these two is constantly possessed, these are two; and such as the afflictions of the peak of existence that ordinary beings possess, which are inherently possessed. Non-attainment is divided into three types: such as the first non-attainment at the time of the sixteenth moment, which is not attained from a state of loss; from then on, the continuum of it is no longer possessed; and the

O, for those who do not possess the path of no outflow at all. Third, if asked, to which dharma do these attainments and non-attainments belong? Answer: They belong to the dharmas of one's own continuum. If they are like a pot and cloth unrelated to causes, then it is possible to be shared with others. If it is related to the continuum, but the attainment of another continuum arises, then an Arhat would have the afflictions of a common person, and a common person would also attain the path of the noble ones, so effort would be meaningless, and liberation would occur without effort. A special case is that although the two cessations (referring to cessation by discrimination and non-discrimination) are unrelated to the continuum, the object to be abandoned is related to the continuum, so there is attainment and non-attainment of abandoning them. Non-cessation by discrimination is because the conditions for various dharmas are not complete, so all sentient beings possess it. The sutra says, "Who possesses the dharmas of no outflow? All sentient beings." Cessation by discrimination is possessed by all noble ones except those who abide in the first moment of no outflow, who possess all bonds, and also by some common people who are detached from desire in various grounds. Space does not have attainment, the commentary says, "Space does not correspond to anything." The king's son said, "Because this has no connection." The Extensive Commentary says, "It is not related to anything, because there is no object to be abandoned and no cessation." In whom there is attainment, and in whom there is non-attainment, having and not having non-attainment, this is the established tenet. Fourth, if asked, what evidence proves that attainment is substantially existent? Answer: It can be known through scriptural authority and reasoning. The scriptural authority is, the sutra says, "He generates these ten non-retrogressing dharmas, each attained and fully possessed, therefore he becomes a noble one who has abandoned the five branches." The reasoning is, if there is no attainment, then there would be no difference between a noble one with worldly mind and a common person, therefore it is known that one who attains the path of no outflow is a noble one, and one who does not attain is a common person. Therefore, there is also non-attainment, because in whom there is attainment, then that dharma also has non-attainment, this is what the Vaibhashikas say. Fifth, the teacher thinks that the scriptural argument is not reasonable, because that sutra is only talking about mastery.
