梵语dhatu(དྷ་ཏུ།),因为缘起的差别,而用于执持dhara(དྷ་ར།)之义。

The so-called "unindicatable, unimpeded form" is a distinction without special distinction. Refuting, it is different from one's own tenet, and also different from what is done. Why is the mind in the absence of mind? The prophecy of unimpeded form is the consciousness that does not make a representation. This is what is thought. The second is the unindicatable and unimpeded form, eliminating the ten that are impeded and non-form phenomena. The third is, like representation, the mind that arises from oneself in all aspects does not recognize others, so it is non-representational. Secondly, incidentally explaining the cause of arising, there are five: classification, meaning of words, function, characteristics, and the difference between arising and realms. The first is, the great elements are taken as the cause. It is said. What are the eleven touchable arisings mentioned above? They are the earth realm, water, fire, and wind realms. The second is, why is it called arising? Because there has never been a non-arising since beginningless time, or because it causes the form of the fruit to arise in its own form, so it is arising. Why is it called great? Because it is the great cause for the form of the fruit, or because the share in its own function is large, so it is great. In the explanation, it is said that the so-called four great elements are great because they are known to be the basis of all other forms. Or, the aggregates of earth, water, fire, and wind, for those with a large share in function, are great because they abide in the great. The upper Abhidharma says that it is great because its existence is vast, its dependence is great, and its dwelling place is vast. Why is it called realm? The Sanskrit word is dhatu (དྷ་ཏུ།), because of the difference in conditions, it is used to hold the meaning of dhara (དྷ་ར།). That is also because it holds its own characteristics or holds the form of the fruit, so it is the realm. Third, there is the real function, incidentally establishing the sixteen small kinds as non-different, relying on the function to determine the number, there are three points in total. The first is, the common function, relative to the arising change, produces, depends, abides, relies, and increases these five functions. The uncommon function is that the earth holds the fruit form without falling downwards, the water aggregates without separating, the fire matures without rotting or decaying, and the wind causes it to grow from above to above. The second is, the Vaibhashika

Therefore, the elements necessarily arise together, which is proven by the inference of karma, so in the collection of all fruit forms, the four elements are complete. They say this. For example, that which is hard like a stone is the earth element. In that collection, because the functions of gathering, ripening, and moving appear, it is proven that the other three also exist. In water, also because the holding that supports boats, the ripening that does not rot, and the movement of flowing downwards appear, it is proven that the other three exist. In fire, also because the holding that supports dust, the flames gathering into one, and the movement upwards appear, the other three are established. In wind, also because the holding that supports corpses, the dust gathering into one, and the warmth of ripening appear, it is proven that the other three exist. The Sutra School believes that whatever appears wherever, exists in a manifest way, and what does not appear exists as a seed or potential. The Mind-Only School believes that like a dry clod of earth, it arises from one element, like a moist clod of earth, it is made of two elements, like a warm clod of earth, it is made of three elements, and like a rolling clod of earth, it is made of four elements, and so on. Third, to produce the form of a fruit, less is not enough, and more is not necessary, so it is determined that there are only four. Because without earth, the forms of fruits would all fall downwards, so holding is earth; without water, they would scatter like dry ashes, so gathering is water; without fire, they would rot like a piece of meat in summer, so ripening is fire; without wind, they would not grow like a sprout under a stone, so the function of growth is wind, therefore four are needed, and these alone can produce it. Fourth, the distinctions of hardness, moisture, warmth, and movement are explained by the scriptures. Fifth, if one asks, is there a difference between the earth element and so on, which are famous in the scriptures, and the earth and so on, which are famous in the world? There is a difference. Worldly people use the name earth for the color and shape of earth, so the form of the fruit is the object of the eye. But in the scriptures, it is because the tangible sensation of hardness is considered the earth element. Water and fire are also spoken of in terms of color and shape in the world, but in the scriptures, they are spoken of in terms of tangible sensation, as before. For the collection of wind, worldly people also speak of it in terms of tangible sensation, so it is in accordance with the scriptures, or they speak of it in terms of color and shape.
