From which happiness arises, and the existence of valid measurements with measurable meaning, and so on. Among these five, the object directly eliminates, and inference eliminates indirectly, because the object's direct elimination of the opposite side depends on inference. Reliable inference relies on reliable and correct signs, and that correct sign also needs to become a sign of scriptural words, and its positive example needs to be pure self-utterance, which also depends on a reliable person. Secondly, there are two types: contradiction with commitment and contradiction with one's own words. Regarding the difference between these two, the old scholars considered it unreasonable to say that it contradicts the reliable scriptures and contradicts the debater's own words, because each of these two needs to distinguish between these two. Therefore, the adherence to the meaning of a commitment that was previously made but later violated is a contradiction with the commitment, such as the adherence to the meaning of a commitment not to generate happiness from practicing generosity and other virtuous deeds. That word is a contradiction between what is said before and after, because it is committed to generosity and other virtuous deeds as virtuous deeds and promises to generate happiness, but later promises not to generate happiness. Similarly, the phrase "My mother is a prostitute" is also contradictory to the commitment because of the contradiction between the previous and subsequent commitments. The direct and indirect contradiction of the meaning of the word itself is a contradiction with one's own words, such as the adherence to the meaning of a commitment that there is no valid measurement with measurable meaning. That word is a direct and indirect contradiction with one's own words, because it directly says that there is no measurement of what is measurable and the measurer, and indirectly admits that it is a pure self-utterance, thus admitting that there is a measurement for understanding the meaning of what is said. Therefore, establishing those two words as a classification of speech through the contradiction between previous and subsequent commitments and the direct and indirect contradiction of what is said is the view of the scholar. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: "Then what is the difference between these meanings? There is none at all. Then how are they spoken separately? It changes like that through the classification of speech. Because what was established by the former is violated by the latter, it is a contradiction with the commitment. For that very reason, it is said that it was previously committed. The contradiction of the meaning of that very speech is a contradiction with one's own words, for example, saying that inference is not a valid measurement."

It is said, "Like that." The meaning of which is stated in the Treatise on Reasoning: "Here, there are two: one's own assertion and one's own words. Others say scripture and one's own words. The teacher considers them as distinctions of speech." Therefore. Thirdly, there are four: the system that considers scripture as a harm, the system that considers scripture as an obstacle, the system that has both, and the identification of one's own system. First, some students of Dignāga say that pure scripture becomes a harm to the object of clinging to a self-contradictory vow, because it is necessary to accept scripture as valid in establishing generosity, etc., as dharma. Establishing generosity, etc., as dharma is established from the aspect of generating happiness in the future, which is established only by pure scripture, because it is extremely obscure. Therefore, the happiness that arises from practicing generosity, etc., harms the non-arising of happiness from practicing it, because the two are contradictory, and the former is established by valid scripture. The arising of happiness from practicing generosity, etc., and the non-arising of it from practicing it are not obstacles, because the meaning of an obstacle is merely that two contradictory phenomena with equal strength mutually obstruct each other on the same established basis. If scripture is not accepted as valid, then the subject of dharma, generosity, etc., is also not established, so it is impossible for one phenomenon to obstruct another on it. If scripture is accepted as valid, then it is established by valid scripture, so the meaning established by validity is more powerful than the absence of validity. Secondly, some students of Dignāga say that if scripture is accepted as valid, then pure scripture becomes an obstacle to a self-contradictory vow, because if scripture is accepted as valid, then the arising of happiness from practicing generosity, etc., and the non-arising of it from practicing it are of equal strength, because the establishment of the arising of it from practicing it depends on valid scripture, and that also depends on accepting scripture as valid, because at that time, the non-arising of happiness from practicing generosity, etc., is also established by valid scripture, because at that time, there is an acceptance of valid scripture that shows the non-arising of happiness from practicing generosity, etc. Thirdly, some say that, in terms of pure scripture, scripture is a harm.
