There are four ways of refutation. The first is: such as permanence (constancy). The second is: wanting to understand that the correct reason (hetu) that serves as the basis for inference is on the subject (dharmin), but not on other subjects, which will be explained in the section on self-establishment below. The third is: that sound is impermanent directly refutes, and the inference that realizes sound as impermanent refutes indirectly. The fourth is: that sound is impermanent directly refutes that sound is permanent, because it is something directly contradictory to that, and because it has a reliable basis. To establish it (sound is impermanent), one must posit the correct reason for establishing sound as impermanent, and there are two cases for that, namely positing what is made and things as reasons. To establish their pervasion (relation), there are unconditional reasonings and harmful reasonings. Third, trust refutation has three aspects: definition, example, and determination of nature. The first is: the contradiction that can be directly refuted from the mere vow itself, which is mainly established by trust inference. The second is: for example, happiness does not arise from practicing generosity, etc. The third is divided into two: the necessity of explaining trust refutation, and the actual explanation of refutation with necessity. The first is: in order to understand that trust refutation applies to, for example, the Charvakas who believe that there are no past and future lives, and who do not accept inference as valid; and the Jains who believe that there is no one who knows all knowable things, etc. The second is divided into three: the refuter, what is to be refuted, and the way of refutation. The first is: in general, trust has five aspects: the person of trust, words, signs, inference, and object. The first is: the Buddha Shakyamuni, who is complete with all qualities and has exhausted all faults, is real, because the Ornament Sutra says: "As long as faults are not exhausted, at that time it is not a trustworthy person." Therefore, the opponent who acknowledges that meaning as valid (pramana) is also included in it. The second is: the scriptures spoken by the Buddha Shakyamuni are real, because that treatise says: "One who has exhausted faults does not speak false words, because there is no cause for it." Therefore, the words spoken by the opponent who acknowledges that meaning as valid are also included in it. The third and fourth have been said before. The fifth is practicing generosity, etc.
