The nature of. To refute those two, there are five clinging points of the proposition, which are: sound is not audible, a part is other than the whole with three qualities, the whole with three qualities is other than its own part, the whole with three qualities exists, and all words have the meaning of falsehood, and so on. This is the view of Lha Shak. The Ornament Master believes that it is unreasonable to identify the clinging points of the proposition that harm the difference of the dharma and the difference of the dharmin in the opposite way to the former, because it contradicts what is said in the Compendium. Second, there are five: the basis of classification, the nature of classification, the reason for distinguishing, the meaning of how to distinguish, and dispelling doubts about number and order. The first is just the negation of valid cognition. The second is, in terms of reasoning, there are five types of negation: direct perception, inference by the power of things, acceptance, one's own words, and fame. In the Compendium, acceptance and one's own words are combined into "belief" and said to be four. So, what is the reason for combining these two into one? Some say that both pure self-utterance and pure scriptural utterance are equally correct as the result of measuring the intention of the prompter, which is unreasonable, because pure self-utterance cannot become a correct reason for measuring the intention of the prompter in one's own view, nor can it become self-utterance in the view of others. Our own system is that there is a reason for combining these two in the Compendium, because it is to understand that these two are the same in the place of belief of the same debater. It is necessary to teach in this way, because it is to show that if the debater himself does not admit that meaning is valid cognition, he will not enter into speaking pure self-utterance, and if he does not admit that the treatise is valid scriptural cognition, he will not enter into examining the meaning that is famous there, these two are the same. Third, it is divided into four from the perspective of elimination, and there are two types of elimination: elimination from the perspective of manifest realization and elimination from the perspective of hidden realization. From the perspective of the first, it is the elimination of direct perception. The second, hidden realization is inference, and that is also after determining pervasion and property of subject.

Regarding the scope of pervasion, it can be divided into two types: established by factuality and established by commitment. Among them, the refutation by inference based on the sign of the first type is the refutation by factual inference. For the second type, the scope of pervasion can be divided into two types: commitment by all beings and commitment by the proponent himself. Among them, the refutation by inference based on the sign of the first type is the refutation by common convention. The refutation by inference based on the sign of the second type is the refutation by reliance. Fourth, these four refutations are not the same in essence but different in aspects, nor are they the same in what is to be refuted but different in distinctions, nor are they different in names, but only different from the perspective of elimination. If someone asks: Then, (the text says) "by the commitment of one's own words, etc.," this contradicts the statement that all four valid cognitions cause harm to the same object of harm. Answer: There is no fault. Because in the case of negating the essence of a phenomenon, the tenets that each wishes to establish are different, so it is impossible for the four valid cognitions to cause harm to the same object of harm. However, in the case of negating the distinctions of a phenomenon, etc., for the same tenet that one wishes to establish, because the ways of commitment are different, it is possible for the four valid cognitions to cause harm to the same object of harm. Fifth, in summary, (the text says) "Direct perception, meaning, inference, reliance, common convention are self-established," thus proclaiming the four refutations. Here, the refutations of common convention and reliance are explained in detail, but what is the reason for not explaining the refutations of direct perception and factual inference in detail? Because this is the occasion for explaining the ways of harm in detail, and the ways of harm by factual inference and direct perception have already been explained in the chapters on self-interest and direct perception. However, slightly explaining the way of harm by direct perception is to explain in detail the necessity of mentioning "meaning" in the text and mentioning "what is heard" in the commentary. In summary, the four refutations are proclaimed here merely to identify the classification and definition of refutation, so there is no fault of repetition with the previous two chapters. In summary, although the refutation of direct perception is proclaimed first, the reason for explaining the refutation of direct perception after the refutations of common convention and reliance here is that the detailed way of harm by direct perception has already been explained in the chapter on direct perception, and in the root verse, it is also slightly explained by mentioning "meaning," and in the commentary, by mentioning "what is heard."
