If the opponent, during a debate, admits defeat and remains silent, or says something else slightly, how can that be categorized as a seemingly valid reason? Ultimately, what can be established is the object of the characteristic that turns the uncomprehended into the comprehended. Therefore, not stating the limb that can establish is the place of being refuted, as it is said. Other than these, others are not the place of being refuted. As it is said: Furthermore, the previous and later debaters, other than those with seemingly valid reasons and those without courage, there is no reason to consider others as the place of being refuted. Because everything is shown merely through the words of both, therefore, for detailed distinctions not included in these two, due to the lack of difference in merit, it will become very excessive. Therefore, detailed elaboration is meaningless, as it is said. Placing the senses as the place of being refuted is not the intention, because, both, are the place of refutation. As it is said, and in some parts of the scripture, it is not said that the senses are the place of being refuted. Second, the Foot-Eye School believes that it is unreasonable to assert twenty-two places of refutation, such as opposing the vow, other vows, etc., because all the places of refutation are included in the previous four, and others besides that are not the place of being refuted. Third, there are three, namely, distinguishing from the perspective of person, necessity, and mode of expression. The first is: For three people, there are six modes of expression. That is, for the previous debater, there are two kinds of speech: establishing the object of meaning and refuting errors; for the later debater, there are two kinds of speech: asking for intention and stating errors; for the witness, there are two kinds of speech: stating accordingly and distinguishing differences, totaling six. Second, there are two, namely, establishing one's own intention is the speech of establishing, and refuting others' intention is the speech of refuting. First, there are two, namely, the speech of establishing is correct, and the speech of establishing is incorrect. First, there are characteristics, the way of combining speech, the function of speech, and four kinds of distinctions. The first is: The characteristic of inference for other purposes can also represent this, because it has been said before. Second, there are three: negation, affirmation, and abandonment. First, there are two: negating the view of the ancient school and negating the view of the Land of Snows school. The first is: Speech possesses five limbs

Thus, it is applied: Sound is impermanent, because it is produced. For example, like a pot. The pot is produced, and sound is also produced. Therefore, sound is impermanent. This is how it is applied. Among them, 'Sound is impermanent' is the proposition. 'Because it is produced' is the reason. 'For example, like a pot' is the example. 'The pot is produced, and sound is also produced' is the application. 'Therefore, sound is impermanent' is intended to show the conclusion. That is unreasonable, because this is verbose language, the universal statement is incomplete, and the proposition, application, and conclusion are superfluous. Some say that according to the system of the 'Treasury of Reasoning,' the meaning of that statement not expressing universality is that if sound is produced, sound is pervaded by impermanence, but if being produced is pervaded by impermanence is not stated, using 'being produced' to negate that, if that statement does not state that being produced is pervaded by impermanence, then it follows that it is impermanent, because it is produced, such a pervasion will not go to direct contradiction. Regarding this, there are two situations: not understanding the meaning of the former, and the refutation not applying to others. The first situation is that the intention of the 'Treasury of Reasoning' is not as you state, because that statement also does not state that sound being produced is pervaded by impermanence. The second situation is that if one accepts that being produced is pervaded by impermanence, then that does not pervade being stated directly, just as using the reason of being produced to establish that sound is impermanent, in the dissimilar argument, even if one accepts that being produced is pervaded by impermanence, it is not stated directly. Therefore, the meaning of the universal statement being incomplete is that this, using the reason of being produced to establish that sound is impermanent, because it is a correct similar argument, whatever is produced is pervaded by impermanence. Like this, it must be stated directly, and that is the meaning of being incomplete. The second situation is that some Tibetans, for situations with two limbs, also use the third case, such as 'because there is smoke in some places' and 'sound is also produced,' and some use the fifth case, such as 'because there is smoke in some places' and 'because sound is also produced,' which is unreasonable, because such incomplete language will lead to the proposition, therefore, because there is smoke, there is fire, and because it is produced, it is impermanent, one must state the proposition. If at that time it is not necessary to state the proposition, because it is understood through the meaning, so they think.
