Because that which cannot be expressed by words is the exclusion of fame. The third is that the inference of fame excludes through that which cannot be expressed by the word "rabbit moon," and the object of that, which can be expressed, is the actual excluder. What direct contradiction is there between these two? Because the former has the valid means of establishment. What is that like? There are two ways to establish it: to establish that the object is expressible and to establish that the object-possessor is expressible. The first is: whatever is the meaning that appears to cognition is pervaded by being expressible by a word that follows intention. For example, just as that which appears to cognition with branches and leaves can be expressed by the word "tree," so too is the rabbit moon. This is an example of the combination of the characteristic of fame by Dharmakirti. The second is: whatever follows convention is pervaded by being applicable to all meanings. For example, like self-satisfied cognition. The word "moon" and so on, those arbitrary words are also like that. This is an example of the combination of the characteristic of fame by Lhawang Blo. Third, examining the intention of the two explanations. In the Pramanasutra, it says: "That for which there is no uncommon inference, because of the meaning that contradicts the fame arising from words, that exclusion is also not a subject, for example, 'The rabbit moon is not the moon, because it exists.'" And in the Pramanavarttika of that same text, from "related to the desire of a person" to "that is an uncommon desire," are the two explanations of one's own system, and "taking this example as the basis," etc., he speaks of refuting the explanations of other systems. Regarding this, there are two aspects: refutation and establishment. The first is: according to the views of previous scholars such as Phya-pa, fame in general has two types: the fame of terms and the fame of conventions. Therefore, there are also two reasons for establishing that. The first is: distinguished by the non-inverted exclusion of others, establishing that it can be expressed by words, complete with three aspects. For example, a white ox is the subject, it can be called by the term "ox," because it is a collection of cows, etc. And the basis with bark is the subject, there is a tree, because there is bark. The second is: the non-inverted exclusion of others.

To establish that something can be expressed by sound alone, without any erroneous distinctions, requires the fulfillment of three conditions. There are two types of establishment here: the establishment of what can be truly expressed and the establishment of what can be expressed through attachment. The first is: taking the sound and meaning of "the one with a rabbit" (moon) as the subject, it can be truly expressed by the sound "moon" because it is the object of conceptual grasping. The reason, property, and meaning here are all merely thoroughly imputed. The second is: taking the self-character of "the one with a rabbit" as the subject, it can be expressed through attachment by the sound "moon" because it exists. The reason and property here encompass both existence and non-existence of things. Therefore, the first explanation is in terms of what can be expressed through attachment, and the second explanation is in terms of what can be truly expressed. The fame of terms is: because sound and mind are not confused about the certainty of meaning, it is possible to be attached to it. They think that because it has been shown that the sound with reason enters the certain object, it is not mentioned here. The one with water eyes also thinks so, that is, there are two kinds of fame: the fame with the reason of designation and the fame with the reason of characteristic. The first establishment is: taking the one with a rabbit as the subject, it can be expressed by the sound "moon" because it exists. The second establishment is: taking white butter residue as the subject, it is a cow because it is a lump of curd etc. They think so. These are unreasonable, if the fame of terms is placed on the signified, it is not the content of the present discussion, and because sound and mind are not confused about the certainty of meaning, it is possible to be attached to it, which is also the definition of terms, which has been refuted above. It is also unreasonable to divide the establishment of the fame of designation into two kinds of arguments: the establishment of what can be truly expressed and the establishment of what can be expressed through attachment. When distinguishing the state of affairs, although it is possible to distinguish between what is truly expressed and what is expressed through attachment, when relying on the correct reason to realize what is to be established, the two cannot be distinguished, because at that time the two must be confused to realize what is to be established. As it is said in the Treatise on Reasoning: Some people use designation and terms, to divide fame into two kinds, terms are not the content of the discussion here, such a definition has been refuted before, with the truly and attached expressible,
