Therefore. Third, pervasion is established by the power of direct perception, while pervasiveness is established by the reasoning that prevents the establishment of a self-nature relationship between sound and meaning. Fourth, dividing from the perspective of the method of establishment, there are two types: valid reasons for establishing meaning and valid reasons for establishing terms. There are two aspects to this: refutation and establishment. The first is that some people think that the characteristics of valid signs for establishing meaning and establishing terms are, respectively: a valid sign for that aspect is a co-substrate that is both the nature of the actual object to be proven and the characteristic of that aspect, and if it is that, then it must be the characteristic; a valid sign for that aspect is a co-substrate that is both the nature of the actual object to be proven and the signified of that aspect, and if it is that, then it must be the signified. If they say this, then because it is necessary to prove that sound is not momentary and that sound is impermanent, from the perspective of the opponent, sound is the subject, it is impermanent, because it is made. When this is stated, 'made' is the subject, and it is too extensive for the first two characteristics, because it is the signified. Also, that is the subject, and it is too extensive for the latter signified, because it is the latter two characteristics. If you accept this, then such an opponent is the subject, and from your perspective, 'made' is not a valid reason for establishing the term 'sound is impermanent,' because you are an opponent who is uncertain about the meaning of 'sound is impermanent.' Some people divide it into three types: establishing only meaning, establishing only terms, and establishing both meaning and terms. The first is that consciousness is the subject, and it is certain to perish immediately after being established, because it is made. The second is that in a place clean of pots, there is no pot, because there is no pot established by valid cognition. The third is that the cause, pervasive, and non-apprehension are all reasons, but this is unreasonable, because if it is a valid reason for establishing meaning, then it is contradictory to be a valid reason for establishing terms. Some people say that the characteristic of a valid reason for establishing meaning is that it is a reason that possesses the three aspects that do not require primarily establishing the term of the object to be proven merely by stating it on the subject of what is to be known. It is divided into merely establishing meaning and merely establishing meaning, the first of which is sound.

Subject, it is impermanent, because it is made. Secondly, sound is the subject, once produced it is certain to perish, because it is made. Definition of the valid reason for establishing a name: On the subject to be known, merely stating the meaning of the dharma to be established, without having to primarily establish it, the reason that possesses the three aspects. Divided, there are two types: merely establishing a name and solely establishing a name. First, in a rocky cave without trees, there is no peacock, because there are no trees. Second, these are the reasons of non-apprehension of the nature. So it is said. Then, the fact that it is made becomes a valid reason for merely establishing the name that sound is impermanent, it should follow, because the absence of trees becomes a valid reason for merely establishing the name that there is no peacock in a rocky cave without trees. If you accept this, it contradicts the fact that it is a valid reason for merely establishing the meaning. Second, there are three: definition, examining contradiction and non-contradiction, and determining meaning and name. First, the definition of the valid reason for establishing meaning: On the dharma of the reason that is merely stated, the relationship between the name and the named is not established, the reason that possesses the three aspects. Divided, there are two types: taking the signified as the dharma to be established and taking the definition as the dharma to be established. Respectively, such as, sound is the subject, it is impermanent, because it is made. And, intelligence is the subject, it is momentary, because it is made, and so on. Definition of the valid reason for establishing a name: On the dharma of the reason that is merely stated, the relationship between the name and the named is established, the reason that possesses the three aspects. As an example for refutation, such as, in a place devoid of a pot, there is no pot, because the pot is not apprehended by valid cognition. As an example for establishment, such as, white curd is the subject, it is a cow, because it is a mass composed of cow dung and so on. Second, some say that these two are not contradictory, the scripture says: Therefore, cause and nature. In the commentary on this, it says: The non-apprehension of cause and pervasive are the reasons for both. In its explanation, Shawa says: Also, the term "also" establishes both refutation and name. Dharmottara says, the term "also" is for refutation and name. Just as result and the pervaded are not permissible, the non-apprehension of cause and pervasive is real.
