Explanation of Valid Cognition through Inference Explanation of Valid Cognition through Inference Secondly, inference is twofold: inference for oneself and inference for others. The first is twofold: definition and ascertainment of its nature. Firstly, some say, "The intellect that realizes the object to be proven from the sign that is certain due to the power of the three modes of valid cognition" is not reasonable, because the three modes themselves need certainty, so there is a fault of repetition in the certainty of the power of valid cognition. Therefore, the intellect that realizes the object to be proven from the sign that possesses the three modes. As it is said in the Pramāṇasūtra, "Inference, twofold, for oneself, is seeing the meaning from the sign with three modes." Inference for oneself, inference, valid cognition, etc., are its synonyms, so there is no need for a separate definition. Secondly, there are two: the sign by which one realizes, and the explanation of the object to be proven that is realized by it. The first is twofold: explaining the four reliances and three aspects, and the divisions of the sign based on that. Firstly, the basis of reliance for the first mode is the subject of knowledge desire. The basis of reliance for subsequent agreement and disagreement is the two aspects. And the reason for establishing them as the basis of reliance, and three. The first is twofold: generally considering the meaning of the word to be inferred, and specifically determining the difference in meaning that is relevant to the occasion. Firstly, there are three: the object to which it applies, the determination of the occasion to which it applies, and the definition of the word of how it applies. The first is, in the Treatise on Understanding, it is said, "Aspect and that which is to be inferred, and that which is to be proven," these are synonyms, so the object to which they apply is also threefold: because they apply to the subject of knowledge desire, the object to be proven, and the meaning of the collection. Regarding applying to the subject of knowledge desire, it is also said, "The aspect is the subject," and "That which is to be inferred is the subject here with the distinction of knowledge desire," and "That which is to be proven exists in accordance with the dharma." Regarding applying to the object to be proven, it is also said, "The reason follows the object to be proven, if the object to be proven does not exist, it does not exist." Regarding applying to the meaning of the collection, it is also said, "By stating that which is to be proven, even indirectly, it is not possible." That also applies as an imputed name to the first two. It applies as a real name to the meaning of the collection, and it does not apply to those other than that, that
