To clarify the meaning of the early Nyaya scholar Dignāga's treatises, Dharmakīrti establishes two modes through reasoning. The first reasoning is: the consciousness with apprehended meaning is the object-consciousness, and the memory-consciousness recalling the past is the consciousness thereof. Their difference is that the former may give rise to the doubt of "whether the aspect of meaning has not appeared," but the latter should not arise, because the aspect appearing in the latter is neither an external object, nor a common entity, nor a non-associated formation. Therefore, the latter is established as having the aspect of meaning, because the latter arises from the former. As it is said: "Because it arises from objects." In the old commentary on this, Śrīgupta said: "In order to establish the two modes of intelligence, object-consciousness is the consciousness thereof, from the difference is the two modes." etc., intending to explain the cited treatise, hence saying "all consciousness is" etc. The second reasoning is: the earlier and earlier meaning-manifesting consciousness is the object-consciousness, and the later and later consciousness is the consciousness thereof. Therefore, consciousness, with the earlier and later aspects, also establishes two modes from the difference of quantity. As it is said: "The experiential consciousness is also." In the old commentary on this, Śrīgupta said: "With experience etc., object-consciousness is the consciousness thereof, from the difference is the two modes." etc., thus composing the treatise. The third reasoning is: the apprehended aspect appearing to the sense-consciousness at its own time is the object-consciousness, and that sense-consciousness is the consciousness thereof. From the sign of the certainty of simultaneous apprehension, two modes are established. As it is said: "Certainly simultaneous with intelligence," as quoted before. The fourth reasoning is: the aspect of meaning appearing in the sense-consciousness arising from the clear self-condition sense, the unclear sense, and the intermediate sense, is the object-consciousness, and these three sense-consciousnesses are the consciousness thereof. These three are mutually dependent, and from the difference of clarity and unclearness of the aspect, two modes are established. As it is said: "By the difference of the sense, clarity" etc. In the old commentary on this, Śrīgupta said: "Here also two modes are established, etc., explaining with other reasoning." The fifth reasoning is: the self-condition eye-sense is harmed by cataracts.

When the tip of a lamp flame is seen as colorful and round by eye consciousness, the object aspect that appears in that eye consciousness is the object consciousness, and the eye consciousness is its consciousness. Even though there is no colorful roundness there, two modes are established from the difference in appearance, namely, "Lamps and other circles are." The previous commentary on this states that this also shows that consciousness is of two modes, like this. The sixth reason is: When viewed from three distances—near, far, and very far—the object aspect that appears to the eye consciousness is the object consciousness, and the three eye consciousnesses are its consciousness. From the difference of clarity and unclarity in relation to each other, two modes are established, namely, "Differences such as near and far." The previous commentary on this adds: Now, the reality of external objects does not exist, but in order to explain that the mind appears to arise as the aspect of the grasped and the grasper, "Differences such as near and far" and so on are mentioned. The seventh reason is: The aspect of consciousness, sound, and the mind that grasps the lamp that appears to the mind is the object consciousness, and the mind that grasps them is its consciousness. Even though there is no consciousness, etc., two modes are established from the difference in the appearance of their aspects, namely, "Consciousness, sound, and lamps, etc." The previous commentary on this adds: By saying "Consciousness, sound," etc., it is shown that there is no clear appearance of the object, so it is shown that the mind itself is of two modes. The second part has four points: identifying the opponent who establishes the sign of simultaneous apprehension, identifying the nature of the sign to be established, establishing its mode, and refuting objections to it. First, some say: It is unreasonable to say that the simultaneous apprehension is established by the proponent Sautrāntika against the opponent Sarvāstivāda and below. Because there are also Cittamatrins who establish it, because from the occasion of "necessarily together with the mind," there is a previous proponent who explicitly establishes the reason of simultaneous apprehension. Some say: The previous proponent is the Cittamatrin, and the opponent is the Sautrāntika and below. That is also unreasonable, because there are Sautrāntikas who establish it, because here it is said to the wise
