Explanation of Pramana and its Fruit. Explanation of Pramana and its Fruit. Thirdly, regarding the fruit of pramana, there are two aspects: how the fruit of pramana arises, and the establishment of the fruit of pramana that arises from it. The first has two parts: refutation and establishment. First, the refutation: Some say, "Because entering into objects to be accepted or rejected is its main cause, and because the objects have various aspects, therefore the understanding of the mind is also different." In these cases, these treatises on the fruit of pramana arose in order to explain the latter of the two fruits of pramana, the understood and the not understood. Although this may be the case according to how the fruit of pramana is derived from the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is still necessary to search for how the fruit of pramana is derived from the sutras, so it is not reasonable. Some say, "Pramana is knowledge that does not deceive." In this case, these treatises on the fruit of pramana arose in order to truly understand the newly arisen non-deceptive knowledge as the definition of pramana. Because these treatises prove that the pramana and the understanding of the object to be measured are not different entities, it is established that the pramana understands the object to be measured. Once that is established, it is established that it does not deceive the object to be measured. This leads to a true understanding of the definition. This is also unreasonable, because it does not go beyond the previous faults, and because it takes the understanding of the object to be measured as the proof and the non-deception of the object to be measured as the thing to be proven, which is not the subject of the current discussion. Second, the establishment: According to the sutras, "Direct perception and inference are the two pramanas, the two objects to be measured." And in this Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Because there are two objects to be measured, there are two pramanas." In these cases, in order to establish that pramana is definitely two, if it is established that the object to be measured is definitely two, then what action or result do these two pramanas have on these two objects to be measured? For what reason does the certainty of the object to be measured establish the certainty of the pramana? These two pramanas perform the action of understanding these two objects to be measured. Direct perception understands the self-character in terms of its own essence, and inference understands the self-character in terms of other generalities, and its object is established as a generality. As it says in the Compendium on Valid Cognition: "What is the fruit of this pramana? It is the understanding of the object to be measured. That is knowledge, and that is also the fruit."

Now, what is valid cognition (pramāṇa)? It is that from which, without obstruction, the realization of the object to be measured (prameya) is accomplished. The chapter on direct perception (pratyakṣa) explains how to realize the self-characterized (svalakṣaṇa) through its own nature by means of direct perception. The chapters on self-benefit (svārtha) and other-benefit (parārtha) explain how to realize the self-characterized through the general characteristic (sāmānya lakṣaṇa) other than itself by means of inference (anumāna). Among these, for the former, what is the direct perception that cognizes? What is the self-characterized that is cognized? What is the proof that it cognizes it? First, what is explained is the reasoning for establishing non-conceptualization (vikalpa) in the case of all four direct perceptions, and the explanation that apparent direct perception (pratyakṣābhāsa) does not cause confusion in meaning. Second, what is explained is that in the case of sense direct perception (indriya pratyakṣa), the special atom (paramāṇu) is established as the condition of focus, and in the case of mental direct perception (manas pratyakṣa), the second moment of the object apprehended by sense direct perception is shown as the object apprehended, and in the case of self-awareness (sva-saṃvedana), what is experienced is established as the knower, and in the case of yogic direct perception (yogī pratyakṣa), the principal object is established as the true meaning. Third, what is explained are the treatises on the result of valid cognition (pramāṇaphala), namely, "Direct perception of the object-kind realizes the self-characterized of the object, because it arises in possession of its form," which is the treatise on the first result of valid cognition, and "Self-aware direct perception realizes the self-characterized of consciousness, because it arises in the nature of experience," which is the treatise on the second result of valid cognition. In the case of the first result of valid cognition, the consciousness that is established as realizing the object by reason of arising in possession of the form of the object, that which appears directly to itself, the consciousness itself is the self-aware result of the object, namely, "Even if the external object exists." And so on, are the treatises. In the case of the second result of valid cognition, the establishment of the three kinds of object, subject, and type as the three of valid cognition, result, and measurement, that is also in the face of the deluded mind, the establishment of the three kinds of object, subject, and type as merely appearing as different, but in reality are not different, namely, "Mind and self-nature are inseparable." And so on, are the treatises. The second part has three points: the necessity of explaining the result of valid cognition, the actual result of valid cognition that has necessity, and the necessity of determining that establishment itself. The first point has two points: the necessity of determination and the necessity of elimination. The first point has two kinds: the general necessity and the individual necessity. First,
