appearances. Body and enjoyment are the same, I have declared it to be only mind. (This is because it is said so.) Second, from the Twenty Verses: "When six are combined at once, the finest dust particle becomes six parts. If the six also reside in one place, the aggregate also becomes just a fine dust particle." And from the Ornament of the Middle Way: "The central atom, one atom, what is the nature of viewing? Viewing other atoms as well, if it is said that that nature is this, how can it increase in this way? How can earth, water, etc., become coarse?" It is said that when atoms form coarse objects by means of contact, the reasoning of six surrounding at once applies, and when forming coarse objects by unreasonable means, the reasoning of six surrounding at once also applies. Thus, when one central atom is surrounded by atoms in six directions, does the central atom, from the perspective of viewing the eastern atom, view or not view the atoms in other directions? If it views, then the atoms in other directions will be in the position of the eastern atom. If it is admitted, then the atom will not become larger. If it does not view, then it will become partial. Furthermore, the external phenomena that appear as blue, etc., are the subject of the proposition, and are not truly established, because the true singularity and plurality are not established. Similarly, the hidden place of external objects is the subject of the proposition, and does not truly exist, because the true singularity and plurality are not established. Such reasoning can refute it. Third, if there is no external object, then the Blessed One said in the sutra that the aggregates of form, the realm of form, and the sense bases, etc., exist, wouldn't this be contradictory? Answer: There is no fault, because it was spoken for the sake of those who speak of meaning to enter the Mind-Only school, due to necessity. From the Twenty Verses: "The saying that there are forms and sense bases, is spoken according to the inclinations of those beings who are to be tamed by them, like those beings who are born miraculously." And from the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "The Victorious Ones, according to the need, also teach 'I' and 'mine.' The aggregates, realms, and sense bases are also spoken according to the need." Because it is said so. Second, refuting that valid cognition and meaning are the same, is divided into: refuting from the similar object, refuting from the similar manner, and that the similarity itself is not established. The first is, that sense consciousness

If (consciousness) is the same as the external object, is the external object the same as atoms? Or is it the same as a gross object? If according to the first case, it is unreasonable, because the nature of atoms is subtle and exists in large numbers, while for the sense consciousness, it appears as a gross, round, and unified image. As it is said: By what means do those atoms create such a gross appearance? If according to the second case, is the gross object the same as indivisible atoms? Or is it the same as divisible atoms? If according to the first case, it is unreasonable, because indivisible atoms have already been refuted. If according to the second case, it is also unreasonable, because divisible gross objects are not established as real entities, therefore they cannot be their cause. The second case is, if sense consciousness is the same as the external object, then is it the same in its entirety? Or is it the same in some parts? If according to the first case, sense consciousness would become matter, because it is entirely the same as that (external object). If the entire nature is the same, then consciousness would no longer be consciousness. As it is said: If the entire nature is the same, then consciousness would no longer be consciousness. If according to the second case, the previously appearing sense consciousness would cognize yellow, because it is the same as that (external object) in some parts. If it is the same in some parts, then everything would be experienced by everything. The third point is that sameness itself is not established, because the meaning of sameness must be established on the basis that the dharma previously cognized by valid cognition and the dharma seen later are considered the same, but the external object has not been seen previously. Third, refuting the result as cognizing the external object: If sense consciousness knows the external object, then in what way is it established as cognizing the external object? Is it established by arising from the external object? Is it established by being the same? Is it established by the combination of the two? Or is it established by being able to lead to certainty and the combination of the three? If according to the first case, the subject sense consciousness, it follows that: it is the consciousness that can cognize the colored sense organ, because it arises from that (colored sense organ). If according to the second case, it has already been refuted previously. If according to the third case, then the second moment of the blue-grasping sense manifest consciousness, it follows that: it is able to cognize the first moment of the blue-grasping sense manifest consciousness, because it arises from that (first moment) and is the same as that (first moment) in having the aspect of blue. If according to the fourth case, it is unreasonable, because the external object has not been cognized by valid cognition, therefore it is unreasonable to derive certainty from it. Second, establishing the valid cognition and result of the Mind-Only school, divided into two: the actual proof and the refutation of disputes. The first part has three: establishing appearance as mind, establishing mind as momentary, and establishing momentariness as indivisible. In the first part, it is established by the reason of being clear and having awareness, and by the reason of simultaneous determinate perception, divided into two:
