Even without bran, conceptualization creates connections. So it is said. Furthermore, if analyzed, the smoke arising from fire is not established, because if analyzed, smoke does not arise from fire. It cannot be admitted, because the two valid cognitions that measure external objects, this and that, are the same in terms of being established or not. Therefore, according to the Sautrāntika school, if analyzed, when sense consciousness grasps external objects, and when external objects are made the object of measurement, if analyzed, object-consciousness becomes the result, thus contradicting the main subject to be taught of the three valid cognitions and results. I say that the world holds onto the cause of form. So it is said. When examining one's own nature, it is said that self-awareness is the result. Following these, relying on worldly conventions, sense consciousness grasps external objects, and the Sautrāntika's own way, these two, when analyzed with the reasoning of establishment, consciousness grasping its own nature, these two I speak of. Secondly, the valid cognition and result of the Mind-Only school have three aspects: how it is explained in the sūtras, how it is shown in the commentaries, and determining the meaning of these. The first is: In the sūtra, it says: Or self-awareness is the result. And in its commentary, it says: Consciousness arises with two appearances, namely its own appearance and the appearance of the object. Among those two appearances, self-awareness is the result. This, when analyzed, with the apprehended aspect as the object of measurement, thus shows that self-awareness is the result. Again, it says: From its nature, meaning is determined. And in its commentary, it says: When consciousness, together with the object, is the meaning, then from the self-awareness that is in accordance with it, the desired or undesired meaning will be understood. This, in conventional terms, takes external objects as the object of measurement, thus showing that object-consciousness is the result. The second has two aspects: analyzing and showing that self-awareness is the result, explaining the meaning of the root text and commentary, and showing that object-consciousness is the result in conventional terms, explaining the meaning of the root text and commentary. In the first, denying that sense consciousness is the result given by the external object that appears at the same time, thus showing that self-awareness is the result, and denying that the external object that appears at the same time to sense consciousness is the external object, thus showing that self-awareness is the result, among these two, in the first, asking for the reason for establishing that object-consciousness is the result, and then refuting it, namely, what is object-consciousness, etc., six verses. Therefore, the apprehended and the apprehender

To establish that there is no other substance, it is said: Its experience is its own nature. Etc., these are two verses. Among them, to dispel disputes, dispelling contradiction with fame: Its object is blue, etc., therefore. Etc., this is one verse. Dispelling contradiction with experience: How is it its own nature, therefore. Etc., these are two verses. Dispelling contradiction with seeing: When the grasped and the grasper are distinguished. Etc., this is two and a half verses. Because the grasped and the grasper are not other substances, the self-cognizance fruit is established: Therefore, etc., these are two lines. In short, with the preceding paragraphs, the Sautrāntika school refutes that the grasped aspect appearing to the sense consciousness at its own time is not an external object, but it is the aspect that the external object imparts from its own side, therefore it is considered as another consciousness, thereby showing that there is no other object of knowledge and it becomes the self-cognizance fruit. Now the second is to refute that the appearance of the sense consciousness at its own time is an external object, and to establish it as the self-cognizance fruit. First, ask for the proof of being an external object, and then refute it: If that external object becomes experience. Etc., these are three verses. Among them, to dispel disputes: Here, some are of some. Etc., this is one verse. Therefore, appearance is the only mind, it is the grasped aspect appearing in two ways, but it is not an external object, and the self-cognizance fruit is established: Therefore, one dharma has two aspects. Etc., this is one verse. In short, these paragraphs refute that the Vaibhāṣika school considers the aspect appearing to the sense consciousness at its own time as the external object, thereby showing that it is the grasped aspect, therefore it is the self-cognizance fruit. Or, it is also the self-cognizance fruit. Etc., in the root commentary, the two Śrāvakayāna schools are separately refuted, thereby completing the explanation of being the self-cognizance fruit, which has not appeared in the minds of others before. Second, in conventional terms, showing the meaning cognition as the fruit is an explanation of the meaning of the root commentary: When the object of consciousness is the cause. Etc., these are three verses. The first verse says: In conventional terms, the external object is the measurable, the grasped aspect is the valid cognition, and the meaning cognition is taken as the fruit, thereby showing the two aspects of valid cognition and fruit in the Yogācāra school. In the explanation of the gods: Therefore, that which is similar to the meaning is the valid cognition, and experiencing the meaning is the fruit, thus it is an explanation of the second distinction.
