So it is. Then, what is the objective condition of the root consciousness of the appearance of hair loss? Answer: The appearances upon which that consciousness depends for its arising are the appearances themselves. Because it is the external object that becomes the direct cause of that consciousness. The commentary on the Root Wisdom says: Conch shells, trees, and two moons, etc., also arise from mistaken consciousness due to the self-characteristics of objects and defective faculties. The second has three parts. The first, the immediately preceding condition of similarity, has four aspects: the definition of what signifies, the meaning of the signified word, the function it establishes, and the resolution of doubts about the basis. First, some other systems say that the immediately preceding consciousness that has ceased is the immediately preceding condition, but here it is said that the present consciousness is the immediately preceding condition, so there is a difference. This is not reasonable. Because in both the upper and lower Abhidharma, although it is said "ceased immediately", it is the same meaning as considering the similar present consciousness to be the immediately preceding condition. Then, what is the reason why the difference of the word "ceased immediately" is mentioned there, but not here? Answer: In this system and in the systems of both the upper and lower Abhidharma, if similarity is the immediately preceding condition, then it is the same as arising before its own result. However, in the systems of the upper and lower Abhidharma, there is generally simultaneity of cause and effect, so in order to differentiate it from that, the difference of the word "ceased immediately" is mentioned. But here, in the manner that all causes are pre-existing, merely by being a cause, it is established that it arises before its result, so there is no need to mention the difference of the word "ceased immediately". Therefore, the definition of the immediately preceding condition of similarity is: any awareness that, without being interrupted by other phenomena, mainly generates clear awareness as its own result. Some people refute by saying: The entering mind of the two absorptions is not the immediately preceding condition of similarity to the arising mind, because there are other phenomena intervening between the two. Then they say that, according to our own system, any awareness that, without being interrupted by other consciousnesses, mainly generates the experience of awareness as its own result is not reasonable, which will be explained below. The second is: Because the two, cause and effect, are similar in knowledge, it is similar; because it is not interrupted by other phenomena, it is immediately preceding; because it generates, it is a condition.

No. The Vaibhashikas hold that the immediately preceding consciousness is the immediately preceding condition for all its co-existent concomitants that are its own results, so this seems important, since a small number of mental factors that are immediately preceding conditions can generate many mental factors that are results. Third, in general, the clarity of experience that exists in consciousness alone is a trace left by the previous consciousness, so the aspect of clarity of experience on top of sense consciousness is a trace left by the immediately preceding condition among its three conditions, because it has its cause. Because no other cause is reasonable other than that, since the other two conditions are not themselves phenomena of experience, they cannot be the main generators of clarity of experience. Fourth, then, what is the immediately preceding condition for the co-existent mind of emergence from the five states of mindlessness, such as the two absorptions? Some say that it is the initial mind of absorption itself, because there is an immediately preceding condition for the mind of emergence. Because there is no other cause other than that, since the other two conditions are themselves material. It is also unreasonable to hold that it is the basis of all and the afflicted mind, as do the brothers Asanga, because according to this teacher's system, there is no basis of all and afflicted mind other than the six entering consciousnesses. It is also unreasonable to hold that it is that, since there is unclear mind at that time, as it is said in the Sutra Pitaka: "With one's own system of wisdom leading, seeing things and grasping at others, if so, wisdom will change." As it is said, if there is mind, then there will be its signs, such as verbal expression and bodily movement. This also contradicts scripture, as it is said in the Twenty Verses: "The arising of the mind consciousness is always without perception, and the two absorptions, and mindless sleep and fainting." Therefore, they hold that the meaning of "immediately preceding" is that which is not interrupted by another consciousness of one's own continuum, but not that which is not interrupted by another phenomenon. This is unreasonable, the sense consciousness that has just arisen from the five states, as the subject, it is impossible for your three conditions to gather simultaneously, if either your objective condition or your dominant condition is your substantial cause, then you
