Explanation of Direct Perception as Valid Cognition Explanation of Direct Perception as Valid Cognition Secondly, to ascertain the meaning of each of the bases, there are two: direct perception and inference. The first has three aspects: correct direct perception, the erroneous aspect that appears as direct perception, and valid cognition and its result. The first has three aspects: definition, the divisions of what is to be defined, and the meaning of each of the bases. The first has two aspects: refutation and establishment. The first is: Phya-pa and others distinguish between direct perception and direct perception as valid cognition, defining the former as "cognition that is free from conceptualization and non-mistaken," and the latter as "cutting off superimpositions on what was previously not understood through the power of experience." This is not reasonable, because the division into two is not taught in the scriptures, and what was previously not understood has no determination, and cutting off superimpositions is impossible in the self-aspect of direct perception. The second has two aspects: the actual definition, and ascertaining its meaning. The first is: if considered from the perspective of eliminating wrong conceptions, cognition that is free from conceptualization and non-mistaken, or if considered from the perspective of eliminating dissimilar types, non-mistaken cognition, that is the definition of direct perception. That itself is also the definition of direct perception as valid cognition, because the Pramāṇaviniścaya says: "Direct perception is free from conceptualization and non-mistaken." And, because it itself is valid cognition, no other definition is given for direct perception as valid cognition. The second has three aspects: ascertaining the meaning of being free from conceptualization, ascertaining the meaning of being non-mistaken, and ascertaining the meaning of both. The first has two aspects: identifying the conceptualization to be removed, and the manner of being separate from it. The first is: in general, in all the scriptures, conceptualization is said to be of three types: non-veridical conceptualization, conceptualization with the aspect of coarse mind, and conceptualization that apprehends a mixture of sound and meaning. The first is not the conceptualization to be removed, because all sense consciousnesses of ordinary beings are that. The second is also not, because the yogic direct perception that relies on the mere actual basis of the first dhyāna is together with it. Therefore, it should be established as the third, and here it is also said: "Whatever cognition apprehends sound and meaning, that is conceptualization for it." And, the Pramāṇaviniścaya says: "What is that conceptualization? Conceptualization is cognition that is manifestly expressive, conceptualization is cognition that is liable to be mixed with expression, it is separate from that."

Therefore, what is the need to mention "possible" in the Pramāṇasamuccaya? Some Indians say that it is to gather the conceptual thoughts in the minds of children who are not familiar with language, because the mind that grasps the sound and meaning does not encompass that. Saying this is also the same for the other side, because the mind that grasps "possible" does not encompass the conceptual thoughts in the minds of old people who are familiar with language. If it is said that there is no fault in placing it in the category of grasping "possible," then it is also the same for the former, because it is placed in the category of grasping "mixed." So how is it placed? The mixing of sound and meaning is not a mixing in meaning, but it means that it is permissible to appear as mixed in the face of conceptual thought. Therefore, since these two are not different in terms of meaning and opposite, there is no difference in grasping either. Considering this, the Pramāṇavārttika says, "Grasping the mixed," and the Pramāṇasamuccaya says, "Grasping the possible." In short, the nature of the conceptual thought to be abandoned here, that is, the clinging mind that grasps the mixing of sound and meaning, the clinging mind that grasps the permissible mixing of sound and meaning, the clinging mind that grasps the sound and meaning, and the clinging mind that grasps the general meaning, know that these are not different. Second, some people think that it is unreasonable to be separated from the substance of conceptual thought, because the self-awareness manifest cognition that experiences conceptual thought is not separated from conceptual thought, and there is the fault of becoming too extensive. Others think that it is unreasonable to be separated from the opposite of conceptual thought, because inference also becomes separated from conceptual thought, and there is the fault of becoming too extensive. The self-system is that it does not rely on self-opposite as the nature of conceptual thought, and its meaning is that when self-character is taken as the object, the previous nature is not complete. Second, some people think that it is reasonable to be like a valid cognition, but this is not reasonable, because inference is also not deceptive. Some people think that it is unreasonable to take true meaning as the object, and if it is thought that true meaning is taken as the object of action, then inference also becomes non-deceptive, and there is the fault of becoming too extensive; if it is thought that the treatise is taken as the object, then it does not pervade self-awareness and yogic manifest cognition. Some people think that it is unreasonable not to be deceived by the object of grasping, because the previous fault still exists. The self-system is that the Pramāṇasamuccaya says: "Not being deceived, such as being deceived by dizziness, rapid rotation, and illusions of boarding a boat, and
