Some say that dividing perception into four types is not a definitive number that excludes other possibilities through reasoning. This is because mind-perception is not a valid cognition, so it cannot prevent the number from being smaller. Also, because there are five perceptions, such as eye-consciousness and direct cognition, it cannot prevent the number from being larger. Therefore, it is established according to necessity. The reason is that the materialists believe that sense-perception is not a valid cognition, those who have not pierced their ears do not accept mind-perception as valid cognition, the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas do not accept self-awareness, and the Samkhyas do not accept yogic perception. To refute these four wrong conceptions, it is said that the division into four is made. However, this is not reasonable, because if mind-perception is not a valid cognition, then those who have not pierced their ears cannot refute the wrong conception of believing so. Moreover, eye-consciousness and direct cognition are included in either self-awareness perception or yogic perception. Some say, "The four perceptions are the system of the Sutra school, the Vaibhashikas have three, and the Vijnanavada has two." Dividing into four according to the literal meaning of this statement is not the system of the Vaibhashikas, because they do not accept self-awareness perception. It is also not the system of the Vijnanavada, because they do not accept sense-perception and mind-perception. Therefore, saying that it is only the system of the Sutra school is also unreasonable, because in the 'Object Analysis,' the three conditions of sense-perception are explained in the system of the Vijnanavada, so sense-perception must be accepted. Moreover, it is explained in the 'Commentary on the Treasury of Reasoning' itself that if sense-perception is accepted, then mind-perception must be accepted. Some say that the meaning of this text is taken to mean perception that is not mistaken about the object of appearance. This is also unreasonable, because the Vijnanavada must also accept that for the two perceptions of sense and mind, in whichever perception the object of appearance has become perception, it is not mistaken. So what is the intention of this text? If we speak from the point of view of convention, the Vijnanavada accepts that the two perceptions of sense and mind are valid cognitions for external objects. However, the definitive number mentioned here is from the point of view of examining the ultimate reality. In that case, it is impossible for the two perceptions of sense and mind to become valid cognitions for external objects. Therefore, only self-awareness perception can become one's own nature. So the first three perceptions are also the same in terms of nature and also the same in terms of object. Therefore, only self-awareness perception.

It is established. Yoga direct perception is a valid cognition of the nature of reality as its object, so although it is one in essence with self-awareness direct perception, it is established as different from the perspective of the object. According to the Sautrāntika school, all four are different from the perspective of the object: self-awareness direct perception is consciousness, sense direct perception is external objects, mental direct perception is external objects that are different substances from that object, and yoga direct perception is the establishment of true meaning as a valid cognition, which is due to the nature of reality. As it is said in the auto-commentary of the Tattvasaṃgraha: "The determination of the number of direct perceptions is based on the Sautrāntika school, and when external objects are accepted, they are divided into four from the perspective of the object. As it is said in the sutra: 'Monks, the consciousness of form is of two kinds, namely, the eye and the mind.' This is the intention of that." Furthermore, the Vaibhāṣika does not accept self-awareness, so there are three direct perceptions. According to the Vijñānavāda school, there is no possibility of anything other than self-awareness and yoga direct perception, which is the intention of glorious Dharmakīrti. Thus, in the case of the two, valid cognition and result, when the valid cognition and result of sense consciousness are established, self-awareness is said to be the result. And in the *Ālambanaparīkṣā*, it is said that the cause of sense direct perception in the Svātantrika-Yogācāra system, and in the root commentary of the Tattvasaṃgraha, it is said that when direct perception is divided into four from the perspective of the object, it is necessary to accept external objects, so it is said to be only the Sautrāntika system. If one can understand these as one key point, then one will understand that at the beginning of the second verse of the root text of the Tattvasaṃgraha, if one knows to add the words "from the perspective of the object," then all the key points will be naturally liberated. Some say, "The four direct perceptions are the Sautrāntika system, the Vaibhāṣika has three, and the Vijñānavāda has two." This is not reasonable, because the Vaibhāṣika school does not have mental direct perception, because it is not mentioned in any part of the Abhidharmakośa and other texts. It is also not established by reason, because it must be established by scripture. It is also unreasonable for the Cittamātrins to believe that sense direct perception and mental direct perception are not valid cognitions. If so, then they should believe that there is no difference between the sense consciousness with stable impressions and the sense consciousness without stable impressions in terms of whether they are valid cognitions or not. However, it is said in the Pramāṇaviniścaya that there is a difference between the two in terms of whether they are valid cognitions or not, because the boundary of the near-defiled impressions
