Thus, it is firmly established, like fire. Or it can also be established by reversing it, which means: Even if other conditions are complete, if a certain function of these sense bases is incomplete, then sense consciousness will not arise. From this sign, it can be established that this function exists. Moreover, this function will not go beyond the scope of matter and consciousness. Therefore, it should not be consciousness. If it is sense consciousness, then it has existed before sense consciousness arises, and it will become infinite. If it is consciousness, then it does not need to rely on these sense bases. Therefore, because it is established as matter, it is only acknowledged as having form. Like the Sarma flower and so on, it cannot be established by reasoning for the time being. Therefore, the Sutra followers of the reasoning school do not acknowledge it, which is the key point. The second point is that both the Sutra and Mind-Only schools agree that self-nature is self-cognizant direct perception. However, the Sutra school believes that establishing it as sense direct perception must rely on external objects to establish it, so it is considered to be other-cognizant consciousness. The Mind-Only school believes that it is not a reliable measure for objects other than itself, so it is considered to be self-cognizant. Therefore, because there is no other-cognizance, it is considered to be the result of self-cognizance. It's like this. The third point is that in the Treatise on Valid Cognition, it says: "That which is combined with names and categories, etc., and is free from conceptual thought is direct perception." It is only established in this way. In this Commentary on Valid Cognition, if there is no cause of confusion, then it is established through direct perception; if there is a cause of confusion, then it is established through reasoning. In the latter, in general, although there are many reasons, therefore, the wisdom arising from the senses is all with special objects. That is to say, sense direct perception is a dharma, it is free from conceptual thought, because it is the consciousness that clearly appears as its own characteristic. The fourth point is that sense direct perception is a dharma, it is not confused, because it is not the cause of confusion that produces confusion, but it is the consciousness that the self-characteristic gives its own similar image from its own side. In the fourth point, the meaning of the words is generally shown, and the establishment of the three conditions derived from it. The first point is that although sense direct perception is similarly produced from the three conditions, it is not named from the perspective of the objective condition and the immediately preceding condition, but from the perspective of the dominant condition, it is generally named sense direct perception, and specifically named eye consciousness, etc. What is the reason for this? In general, the expression with conceptual thought

The reason for the necessity is: In terms of terminology, it is for the sake of easily understanding that meaning. From the perspective of the dominant condition, from the term "sense consciousness" one can easily understand the first of the four types of valid cognition, because the colored sense organ is the unique dominant condition of that first of the four types of valid cognition. For example, a drum is called a drum sound because the drum is the unique cause of the drum sound; a wheat seed is called a wheat sprout because the wheat seed is the unique cause of the wheat sprout. If terminology is used from the perspective of the objective condition and the immediately preceding condition, one cannot easily understand the first of the four types of valid cognition, because form is the common objective condition of both the sense consciousness that apprehends form and the mental consciousness, and consciousness is the common immediately preceding condition of all five sense consciousnesses. For example, one cannot understand the unique meaning of drum sound through "the sound of a stick," nor can one understand the unique meaning of wheat sprout through "a sprout with water and fertilizer." Likewise, in short, "Because it is a unique cause, it is named by the sense organ." Like that, in the Pramāṇavārttika it says, "Because seeing the very thing that makes one understand." And so on, three verses, and in the Tattvasaṃgraha it says, "Because the sense organ is a unique cause, it is sense consciousness, like the sound of a drum." Thus it is said. The second part has two parts: the general establishment of the three conditions, and the individual establishment of the three conditions. The first part has three parts: the way it is explained in other treatises, an analysis of the master's own intention, and incidentally, an analysis of whether there is an objective condition for the mistaken sense consciousness. The first is: In the Abhidharmakośa it says, "Causal condition, co-emergent, homogenous, associated, pervasive, and maturation, causes are considered to be six types." Thus it speaks of six causes. In the Root Wisdom Treatise, when expressing the views of the substantialists, it says, "The four conditions are cause, object, and immediately preceding, and dominant condition is also like that, the fifth condition does not exist." Thus it speaks of results arising from four conditions. Among these, the causal condition is: the other five causes besides the efficient cause. The immediately preceding condition is: present mind and mental factors that are not interrupted in their continuum. The objective condition is: Dharma
