When self appears as the two aspects of apprehended and apprehender, the appearing as apprehended becomes the object to be experienced, and the appearing as apprehender becomes the subject to be experienced. In this state, the self-awareness that relies on the apprehended aspect is itself. The second is that, on top of all cognitions such as the apprehended aspect, the apprehender aspect, and the cognition that is empty of both apprehended and apprehender, it is the part where the nature of self is merely born as experience. Thirdly, if cognition exists, then examine whether self-awareness necessarily manifests its own nature; examine whether self-awareness and other-awareness are contradictory; and examine whether self-awareness has an object. There are three aspects. The first aspect is that some ancient scholars say that the cognition with dualistic appearance has two parts: the part where its own nature is slightly clear and the part where it cognizes other objects. The first is that because it is the apprehender aspect, self-awareness manifests its own nature; the latter is the apprehended aspect, so self-awareness does not manifest its own nature. If you say so, then the Lokayata (Materialist) will say, for Buddhists, feelings such as happiness are phenomena, and they do not cognize their own nature because they do not cognize other objects. For this statement, admitting the answer is reasonable. Furthermore, for the root consciousness that apprehends blue, it does not cognize blue because it does not cognize its own nature. For this view that there is no self-awareness, the refuting inference is not entirely correct because it has been promised. If you admit, then in the Pramāṇaviniścaya it says: "If the object does not appear, then seeing the meaning is difficult to fully achieve." And here it says: "If the self is not cognized, how can one cognize the nature of others?" This contradicts the above statement. Dartika says, if cognition exists, then self-awareness necessarily manifests its own nature, then the conceptual thought that holds the pot, is its own nature the apprehended aspect, the apprehender aspect, or neither of the two nor any other own nature, in which case will self-awareness manifest? If according to the first case, then it (the conceptual thought that holds the pot) is a phenomenon, and self-awareness must manifest, because it is the apprehended aspect. If according to the second case, then it (the conceptual thought that holds the pot) is a phenomenon, and self-awareness must manifest its own nature, because it has been promised. The own nature is the apprehended aspect, and the own nature is the apprehender aspect, both of which, regardless of whether they rely on place, time, or nature, are easily established as a single entity. If you admit, then it is the same as before. If according to the third case, then it is unreasonable, because there is no own nature that is neither of the two nor any other. To this statement, others say that the direct perception of holding the pot

In short, the apprehended aspect and the apprehending aspect, whichever of location, time, or nature they rely on, should become established, comfortable, and a single reality, because a pot exists. If acknowledged, then in a location not cognized by a valid cognition of a pot, those two should also become established, comfortable, and a single reality. This criticism is not valid, because if it becomes established, comfortable, and a single reality by relying on location, then it does not pervade all locations where those two are established, comfortable, and a single reality. Some say that the conception of grasping a pot that is neither of those two, its own nature is not established, because the reason is not established, because the conception of grasping a pot is it. This statement seems to be merely a general fault. Therefore, for the previous school, there is a contradiction in commitment, therefore, because there is no other-awareness. If the self-awareness mentioned at that time is that self-awareness, then self-awareness should become manifest. If the apprehended aspect of the self-nature is self-awareness manifest, then self-awareness should become manifest. It pervades, because at that time it showed the reason for the result of valid cognition established with the apprehended aspect as the object to be measured. For our own school, if it is awareness, then the self-nature is pervaded by self-awareness manifest, and the establishment of this requires reliance on both scripture and reasoning. First, the sutra says, "Conception is also considered self-awareness, because it is not that in meaning, therefore conception." It also says, "Here, self-nature is not sound-meaning, therefore all are manifest to it." Also, the Ornament for Clear Realization says, "The nature of consciousness is separate from the nature of matter, turning into something extremely different from it, what is the non-material nature, this is here the nature of self-knowing." And so on, endlessly, because of concern for many words, it is not elaborated. Second, for what is self-experienced, it is necessary to establish the cause of establishment; for what is not self-experienced, it is necessary to show the cause of elimination. First, the root sense consciousness that apprehends blue, for its own nature is self-awareness manifest, because the aspect that becomes its experience is the nature of the root sense consciousness that apprehends blue. As it is said, "By establishing two dharmas, most self-awareness is also established." Also, because it is, from the sign of later recollection, it can be established that the root sense consciousness that apprehends blue has an experiencer at its own time, and there is no other experiencer, as it is said, "From recollection, self-awareness is also established." Second, for pleasure and so on, there is another experiencer.
