Because, in order to establish the first two moments of mental direct perception as a direct perception that apprehends objects through the condition of the object. At that time, if the aspect of attention is added, it will become seven, because through attention, it can be determined as both self-knowing and other-knowing. Third, refuting disputes, divided into three: refuting the disputes of non-Buddhists, refuting the disputes of other related parties, and refuting the disputes of Tibetans. The first is "Previously experienced at the time of grasping," etc., which should be understood from the meaning of the text. The second is that there is no harm from the faults mentioned in the Ornament (referring to the Pramāṇavārttika), because mental direct perception does not perform the task of determining objects and does not arise alternately. There is no harm from the faults mentioned by Dharmakīrti (referring to Dharmakīrti's works), because it arises when the continuum of sense direct perception is not completed, but not at the end of the completed continuum. If all consciousnesses with clear appearances are not object-cognizing consciousnesses when combined with the function of the eye, then the defining characteristic of eye consciousness will not be found, so there is no harm. Otherwise, if all consciousnesses with clear appearances combined with attention are not mental direct perception, then the defining characteristic of mental direct perception will also not be found, and when clear appearances appear in eye consciousness, clear appearances will also not appear in meditative concentration. Third, it is divided into four: refuting the fault that the name of three aspects is unreasonable, refuting the fault that many similar consciousnesses arise simultaneously is unreasonable, refuting the fault that one cause simultaneously produces many dissimilar results, and refuting the fault that there is no difference in whether or not definitive knowledge is guided. The first is that the Fish Clan Master said: The name of three aspects is unreasonable, just as when looking outward there are two aspects of object consciousness, when looking inward there are also two aspects of self-awareness that experience those two, then there will be four aspects. Just as when looking inward those two are one in self-awareness, when looking outward those two are also one in object consciousness, then there will be two aspects. If so, then it is also unreasonable to divide direct perception into four, because the three of sense direct perception, mental direct perception, and yogic direct perception, have three self-awarenesses that experience those three, then there will be six. If those three are one in self-awareness, then the previous three are one in object consciousness, then there will be two aspects. Therefore,

Also, when observing the present, the three types of direct perception mentioned in the chapter on direct perception, excluding yogic direct perception, arise simultaneously. Therefore, among the four types of direct perception, it has the aspect of three direct perceptions, which is its meaning, but in general, it is not necessarily three aspects. If the aspects of objective conditions, etc., are counted, it is also said to be five and seven. Second: It follows that multiple cognitions of the same type arise simultaneously in the continuum of one individual, because sense direct perception and mental direct perception arise simultaneously. If you say so, there is no fault, because the co-emergent condition of these two is born from the root with color and the mental faculty, so they are different in kind. If so, it follows that multiple cognitions of the same type of mind arise simultaneously, because the five mental direct perceptions arise simultaneously. If you admit it, it contradicts the statement that "sentient beings are each a continuum of consciousness." If you say so, there is no fault, the meaning of the scripture is: in the continuum of one individual, multiple mental consciousnesses do not constantly arise simultaneously, because mental direct perception does not have permanence. Third: It is unreasonable for the first moment of sense direct perception to produce the second moment of sense direct perception and the first moment of mental direct perception simultaneously, because these two are different in kind, and different kinds of results do not arise from one cause. If you say so, there is no fault, because a conceptual consciousness can be the immediate cause of both non-conceptual root consciousness and conceptual consciousness, which is possible. Fourth: If from the second moment of sense direct perception onwards, sense direct perception and mental direct perception arise in equal numbers, then there will be no difference between the two in whether they can generate certainty. In response to this, the "Treasury of Reasoning" says: Root arises from the colored root, therefore root consciousness has a continuum. Mental faculty does not arise from the mental faculty, therefore it has no continuum. And, in its self-commentary, it says: Because the later moment of the colored root arises from the previous moment of the colored root, although it is not a permanent phenomenon like the continuum of non-Buddhists, there is an uninterrupted continuum of similar kinds arising. But the mental faculty is only after the previous root consciousness has ceased, so the mental faculty does not arise from other mental faculties, so there is no continuum. Because ordinary beings cannot connect, so self
