Because it is explained from two perspectives. Second, as previously stated, the sense consciousness that serves as the dominant condition for mental perception, from the aspect of generating the ability of mental perception to apprehend objects, is its dominant condition; from the aspect of generating experience as clarity and awareness, it is regarded as its immediate condition. As stated in the Pramāṇaviniścaya, "Sense consciousness arises from that immediate condition," and so on. Here also, it says, "Therefore, the consciousness of the senses is produced from that immediate condition." Because the immediate condition is identified, it is considered that identifying its immediate condition identifies the dominant condition, so there is no separate explanation of the scriptures that show the dominant condition. Third, when a single moment of sense perception does not arise, mental perception does not arise; when sense perception arises continuously, mental perception also arises in equal number with the second moment of sense perception and onwards, so at that time, the objective condition of mental perception is not the apprehended object of the first moment of sense perception, because that has already ceased at the time of the immediate condition of mental perception. Because, "Due to being momentary, the meaning of what has ceased is not seen." Therefore, the similar second moment of the apprehended object of the first moment of sense perception is the apprehended object of both the first moment of mental perception and the second moment of sense perception, because it acts as the objective condition, and the first moment of sense perception acts as the dominant condition and the immediate condition, from which the first moment of mental perception arises. Also, it acts as the objective condition, and the physical sense organ simultaneous with the first moment of sense perception acts as the dominant condition, from which the second moment of sense perception arises. In short, "Mind also with meaning," and so on. In the Pramāṇaviniścaya, it says, "That meaning, that immediate, the mind also is what apprehends." Here also, it says, "The mind is what apprehends other objects." Second, establishing the nature, there are three: the manner of arising, establishing it as valid cognition, and examining the state of arising. First, after the five sense perceptions have ceased, do the five mental perceptions arise simultaneously or not? If they do not arise, then the difference in the effect will not be established from the difference in the cause; if they arise, then it will follow that there are multiple streams in one individual. If they arise in this way, there is no fault of having multiple streams in one individual, because internally

Because it is held by a single continuum of self-awareness. Otherwise, if the five sense consciousnesses and conceptual thought arise simultaneously, there would be the fault of one person becoming multiple continuums. If someone asks: Then isn't it contradictory to say that "sentient beings are each a continuum of consciousness"? Answer: There is no contradiction. Because when looking inward, it is a single continuum of self-awareness. Second, mental direct perception is valid cognition, because it apprehends the true object without the consciousness being mistaken. However, it cannot, like other direct perceptions, generate certainty by its own power, because it lacks a continuum. Therefore, in worldly terminology, it is not called valid cognition, just as the object of sense consciousness is atoms, but in terminology it is not called an object. Third, record the categories of Indian scholars' explanations, determine the reasonable aspects, and refute the debates on this, divided into three parts. In the first part, the Ornament says: "From habituation, what is the knowledge that abides in front, 'this is,' etc., for the sake of manifesting it, it is considered mental direct perception." It means that mental direct perception is the mind that arises from the power of habituation, thinking "what is this" about the thing that abides in front, and it is born from the mental faculty, and has three characteristics of clear appearance. The order of arising is that first, one moment of sense direct perception arises, then one moment of mental direct perception arises, then the second moment of sense direct perception arises, etc., beginning with the sense direct perception apprehending, and finally the mental direct perception determining. Some people say from the Treasury of Reasoning Self-Commentary: "It is unreasonable to record this as the view of the Ornament, because it is not said in the commentary of the Ornament." This cannot be considered a fault, because it is recorded as the view of the Ornament from the oral instructions of the lineage of gurus, and not recorded what is said in the commentary. Dharmottara believes that after the continuum of sense direct perception ends, one moment of mental direct perception arises, not before, because when the eye faculty is in contact with the object of color, all the consciousnesses that appear clearly are eye consciousnesses, otherwise, it is difficult to find the characteristics of eye consciousness. In the Smaller Dharmottara, it says that mental consciousness is also manifest when the function of the eye faculty has ceased. When the eye faculty is functioning, color.
