Two. The first is the objective condition of sense direct perception. The second is the objective condition of yogic direct perception. Consciousness is the objective condition of the direct consciousness of knowing others' minds. Secondly, the objective condition of sense direct perception, in terms of objects, includes the five objects such as form. In terms of subjects, there are two: the objective condition of sense direct perception and the objective condition of mental direct perception. Should these be established as gross or subtle? On this, there are two aspects: enumerating the various explanations of previous scholars, and identifying the valid viewpoint. The first is that some argue that external objects are divided into indivisible atoms and the gross objects composed of them. The first is not the objective condition of sense direct perception because it cannot impart an image to it. The second can impart an image, so it is an objective condition. By what means do those atoms make it appear as a gross image? Because the scriptures have shown that sense consciousness appears as a gross image, and the image must be imparted by the gross. Furthermore, the objective condition of sense direct perception is gross, because sense consciousness is not mistaken and apprehends the gross. It is pervasive, because all consciousnesses are of diverse nature. The Meaning Chapter states, "Meaning is of diverse nature." Therefore, they say. Some also argue that special atoms are the objective condition of sense direct perception, because scriptures such as "Hands and everything are all non-existent" negate that the gross is a substantial entity of parts, and the scriptures also say that parts are the ultimate truth, and the collection of parts is the conventional truth. If there is something other than special atoms, then if you argue for it, it becomes a redundant argument. Because the scriptures have explained that the gross collection of parts is a fabricated conventional truth. Special atoms can impart a gross image to sense consciousness, because the scriptures say, "By what means do those atoms make it appear as a gross image?" Because the scriptures have shown that sense consciousness appears as a gross image. Some scholars also believe that special atoms are the objective condition of sense consciousness, and it can also impart the image of atoms to sense consciousness. The special thing is that atoms that are not connected to other atoms and are independent cannot impart an image, so they are not special. When adjacent to other atoms, relying on the proximity of its previous moment,

Moreover, other subtle particles, with the previous moment as the co-emergent condition, give rise to subtle particles that can produce appearances for the sense consciousness, which is special. Because it imparts the appearance of subtle particles, what appears to the sense consciousness is the appearance of each individual subtle particle, not the appearance of the coarse. This is because the coarse is merely imputed as a single entity by later conceptual thoughts that have not grasped the details. This is what (Tsongkhapa) said. Second, the coarse, other than subtle particles, is not the objective condition of sense consciousness, because the coarse, other than subtle particles, is repeatedly refuted by Dharmakirti. Subtle particles also have two types: solitary subtle particles without similar companions, and subtle particles with dissimilar companions. The first type is not the objective condition of sense consciousness, because it has not given rise to a special subtle particle that can produce appearances. For the latter type, merely being adjacent to other subtle particles of the same kind does not make it the objective condition of sense consciousness. Rather, each indivisible part of the subtle particles in the state where a certain number of similar subtle particles have gathered and can generate self-grasping sense consciousness is the objective condition of sense consciousness, because it has given rise to a special subtle particle that can produce appearances for the sense consciousness. Although the objective condition of sense consciousness is a subtle particle, it requires a special subtle particle. Considering that a non-special subtle particle is not the objective condition of sense consciousness, the sutras say: The five aggregates of consciousness have accumulation as their object. And the Compendium of Topics says: "Because it is produced by many meanings, it has the sphere of activity of its own meaning and general meaning." Because it is to be produced by many substances, it is said that its own birthplace has the sphere of activity of the general, and it is not from recognizing no difference in different things. And Vasubandhu said: "These are the objects of the own-character of the birthplace, not the own-character of the substance." Similarly, the basis and object of these five aggregates of consciousness are the accumulation. For that very reason, the extremely subtle is invisible, so it is unobservable. Here it is also said, because the sense object is that, therefore it is not a subtle particle.
