It is about engaging and disengaging with whether it is or isn't. Yogic direct perception can arise with certainty in the continuum of noble beings with conceptualization, but it is impossible for yogic direct perception to arise with certainty in the continuum of noble beings without conceptualization and Buddhas. So, how do they engage and disengage with the presence or absence of self-characteristics? Generally, there are three ways: through generating certainty, through the power of meditative absorption, and the inability to express the way of engaging and disengaging. The first is the valid cognitions of ordinary beings and noble beings with conceptualization. The second is the valid cognitions of noble beings without conceptualization. The third is the yogic direct perception in the continuum of Buddhas. Thus, in general, the meaning of a characteristic is to engage and disengage with the presence or absence of self-characteristics, and there are three aspects to this. To regard the term of definite cognition as a universally designated valid cognition, as stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "It is not the result of determining existence or non-existence, therefore it is not a valid cognition and does not change." The meaning of what is said is that there are three such aspects, and in the Treatise on Reasoning it is also said: "The valid cognition of ordinary beings engages and disengages only with certainty. Those who are noble and free from conceptualization are said to act from meditative absorption. The wisdom of the inconceivable, the knowledge of that is immeasurable." Sixth, the direct perception of miraculous powers itself may be deceived by various causes of confusion. Therefore, the subsequent inference, which is the object of the subsequent valid cognition that acts through its meaning, is not for the sake of realizing it as a valid cognition. Therefore, the determination of its nature or the characteristic of the result, which is the nature of the object, which is the result of the object, is because it is the cause of the consciousness possessing the characteristic. Therefore, inference does not exist without such an object. It does not depend on the subsequent valid cognition. In other cases, when direct perception and the things that appear in it arise, if there is no certainty of difference, then it should be known that the subsequent valid cognition does not deceive. And, just as it is completely determined, it also generates certainty on that, therefore, it is itself a valid cognition, and therefore it is not without end. The initial consciousness that appears as fire and water, if there is no familiarity, will also self-

Even if it has already been apprehended by the initial valid cognition, it is because there is a reason for error. Because it does not have the ability to generate subsequent ascertainment, therefore subsequent valid cognition does not enter into it. Therefore, it is established as valid cognition itself, and in this way, it is valid cognition from others. Moreover, when one obtains something that is familiar and clear, it is from oneself, as has been said before. Therefore, direct perception is valid cognition for oneself and others, while inference is from oneself, and one should abide in this. Dharmakirti said: 'The ascertainment of ability is also, inference and, direct perception that appears to be effective, only change from oneself.' And, the direct perception that enters is also, some only change from oneself, that is, eliminating all doubts of error, and understanding the distinction of self-nature. Some only change from others, that is, having the cause of error, and so on. In accordance with these, it is also said in the Jewel of Reasoning: 'The two types of objects and self-awareness, and inferences are all determined from oneself. The first one and distrust, those with causes of error are all determined from others. The effective one and the familiar one, are determined by inference.' This is what was said. Seventh, some say: 'If the valid cognition of what is to be ascertained and, the valid cognition of what ascertains are in the same object, then the later valid cognition will become a decisive cognition. If they are different, since the object is established as another entity, it will not become established as another entity.' Others say: 'Since the object of entry is the same and the object of appearance is different, one is liberated from both faults.' This is unreasonable, because there is the fault that the object of entry of the previous valid cognition becomes permanent, and the fault that the later valid cognition becomes a decisive cognition. And since the object of entry and the object of appearance of direct perception are not other entities, there are three faults of contradicting the commitment. Therefore, the self-system is that the object of entry of the two valid cognitions, earlier and later, is the same continuum, but the substances are different, therefore one is liberated from both faults. Some say that if the valid cognition that is considered to determine others does not cut off the superimposition and defamation on its own object, it is not a valid cognition, and if it does cut off, it will become self-determined. There is no fault in this, because the direct perception becoming a valid cognition on the object does not depend on cutting off superimposition and defamation. Furthermore, some say that the self-aware direct perception that experiences the bliss of the Samkhya system, as a dharma, does not deceive its own object to be measured, and is able to lead to determination by its own power, because it is a self-determined valid cognition.
