Since there is no ascertainment now, it is impossible to derive ascertainment through the yoga direct perception of its continuum. Therefore, it is possible that yoga direct perception has neither self-cognition nor other-cognition. The yoga direct perception of the noble ones that cuts off conceptualization is only self-cognition. Self-cognition direct perception is only self-cognition, because it can, by its own power, derive ascertainment of the main meaning of its object of engagement. For all objects of engagement, self-cognition is not a valid cognition, because the self-cognition direct perception in the continuum of a person whose continuum is defiled by the cause of confusion of permanence-grasping cannot, by its own power, derive ascertainment of the moment of what is known. For the terms of the object of engagement, it is also not the case that all are determined by oneself, because the self-cognition direct perception of inferential experience in the continuum of the Carvaka cannot, by its own power, derive ascertainment of the terms of inference. Mental direct perception, because it is not continuous, cannot immediately derive ascertainment, therefore it is only a valid cognition of other-cognition, this is in terms of the valid cognition of all terms of self-cognition and mental direct perception. Regarding sense direct perception, Dharmottara believes that the direct perception of functional appearance is a direct perception of habituation, therefore it is self-cognition; and the direct perception of entering, if there is no cause of confusion, is self-cognition, and if there is, it is other-cognition, and believes that there are three types of this. In the "Treasury of Reasoning," the direct perception of functional appearance and the direct perception of habituation are separated, and on the basis that these two are self-cognition, the first-time observer and the non-attentive are added, and these two are considered to be valid cognitions of other-cognition. Among them, the direct perception of functional appearance is like the sense direct perception of grasping fire, which appears as if the fire is performing the function of cooking and burning. The habituated one is like the direct perception that has been habituated to the object for a long time and has grasped the subtle differences. The first-time observer is the new seeing of something of a similar kind that has not been seen before, like the direct perception of seeing a yak for the first time. The non-attentive is like the sense direct perception of grasping form when the mind is gathered inward. The cause of confusion is that although it actually arises from the three conditions, it cannot derive ascertainment by its own power due to the obstruction of some internal and external causes of confusion. If we classify this,

Appearance is determined by oneself, and truth is determined by others; generality is determined by oneself, and particularity is determined by others; appearance itself is also determined by others, these are the three situations. If each of these is determined from the perspective of four points, then the example for the first is: in reality it is fire, but when doubt arises in the mind as to whether it is fire or not, it is like the eye consciousness that apprehends the red flames burning in the distance. That red flame is the color of fire, and in this respect it is valid cognition, because it is a non-conceptual, non-erroneous awareness. In this respect, it is determined by others, because it cannot rely on its own power to lead to certainty about distant places, illusory fires, and the light of jewels, etc. The valid cognition that determines it is either by the power of seeing the function of cooking after going to the fire, or by the power of grasping the details through long-term habituation to direct perception, or by the power of inference that recognizes the existence of fire from the sign of seeing smoke arising, or by the power of inference that recognizes the existence of fire from the sign of other elements of the aggregates such as the smell of fire. The example for the second is: in reality it is a tree, but when doubt arises in the mind as to whether it is a tree or not, it is like the eye consciousness that apprehends a tree with branches and leaves. The other three qualities can be inferred from the previous one. The example for the third is: some say that it is like the ear consciousness that apprehends sound when one is particularly attached to a beautiful mental image, but this is not reasonable. Because being particularly attached to a beautiful mental image weakens the ability to generate the ear consciousness that apprehends sound. Because, as it is said in the scriptures: "When attached to other things, when the function is impaired, the arising of consciousness is not seen." Therefore, it is like the eye consciousness that apprehends form when cognition is gathered inward. For this situation, the other three qualities can also be inferred from the previous one. The fifth situation is: if it is valid cognition, then it is not pervaded by either self-determination or other-determination, because these two situations are in terms of conventional valid cognition, and yogic direct perception is not conventional valid cognition. The meaning of conventional valid cognition is also as stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Obtaining benefit and non-benefit, and abandoning, are all preceded by correct knowledge." Therefore, determination is to determine the self-character through guiding the mental expression of certain knowledge.
