Explanation of the Valid Cognition that Determines the Definition of Inference. Explanation of the Valid Cognition that Determines the Definition of Inference. Third, regarding the explanation of the valid cognition that determines the definition on the basis of the defined, there are three aspects: the way it is taught in the scriptures, the way it is explained by scholars, and the way to identify the valid position. First: If the definition of valid cognition is infallible knowledge, and the basis of the defined is determined to be perception and inference, then is the presence of the definition of infallible knowledge on those two bases of the defined determined from oneself or from another? If it is the former, then no one would be ignorant of the definitions of valid and invalid cognition, so teaching the definitions of those two in treatises would become meaningless. If it is the latter, then another determiner would be needed for that, so the determiners would become endless. The answer to that is: "One understands one's own nature from oneself. Validity is from terminology. Treatises are what dispel confusion." Thus it is said. Second, there are three: the system that holds that it is determined only by others, the system that holds that it is determined only by oneself, and the system that holds that both exist. First: Brahmins say, "Although manifestation is established by valid cognition, it is not from valid cognition itself." Thus, although the two valid cognitions determine their respective objects, they do not lead to the determination of infallibility of the definition by their own power, so the intelligence that arises after valid cognition, called discrimination, determines the general definition and contradiction, relation, etc. Therefore, the definition of valid cognition is determined only by others. Thus they hold. Second, some say: Other-determined valid cognition is impossible. If the valid cognition to be determined and the valid cognition that determines are the same object, then the latter valid cognition is meaningless. If they are different, then the object is established as another entity, so it does not become established as another entity. And if the valid cognition that is supposed to be other-determined does not cut off imputation, then it is not valid cognition. If it does cut off imputation, then it becomes self-determined valid cognition. If it is determined, then if it is valid cognition, it is necessarily self-determined valid cognition. Thus they say. Third, there are two ways: distinguishing from the perspective of the subject possessing the object, and distinguishing from the perspective of the object. The first has two ways: distinguishing from the perspective of what is to be exemplified, and distinguishing from the perspective of the definition. First, some translators and others say that the term "oneself is valid cognition" can or cannot lead to certainty by its own power.

It is said that abilities are classified as self-determination and other-determination. The second is that some do not differentiate from the perspective of the object, because if one does not eliminate superimposition on the object, it is not a valid cognition, and if one does eliminate it, there is the fault of falling into self-determination. Differentiating from the perspective of the object-possessor is also not from the perspective of the name and the signified, because the name is the occasion for explaining the valid cognition that determines the definition. Therefore, it is necessary to differentiate from the aspect of the definition, and it is said that for oneself not to be deceived, to draw out certainty by one's own power, and to draw out certainty by the power of others, is established as self-determination and other-determination. The second is that some differentiate from the perspective of the object, and it is said that for one's own object of engagement, to draw out certainty by one's own power, and to draw out certainty by the power of others, is established as self-determination and other-determination. Thus, among the five views divided from the three systems, the first is not reasonable, because all commentaries unanimously explain inference as a self-determining valid cognition, and if the two valid cognitions can draw out certainty by their own power, as they exist in accordance with how they measure their object of measurement, then for oneself not to be deceived, one can also draw out certainty by one's own power. The second view is also not reasonable, because some direct perceptions, although they manifest all the substances of their own object, cannot draw out certainty by their own power, but are instead superimposed in a reversed manner by subsequent conceptual thoughts, and also, Lha (देव) said, after the Vaiśeṣika (Dpyod pa pa, वैशेषिक) prevented the view that if it is a valid cognition, it is necessarily a self-determining valid cognition, he asked: Where do you yourselves think it is? He said: I do not completely think it is self-determining, because some valid cognitions are determined from others, nor do I completely think it is other-determining, because some valid cognitions are self-determining. The third view is also not reasonable, because the inference of the Cārvāka's continuum, as the subject, abiding in the statement that it is a valid cognition, should be able to draw out certainty by its own power, because it is a self-determining valid cognition. If it is accepted, then the Cārvāka would necessarily determine that the inference of his own continuum is a valid cognition. The fourth view is also not reasonable, because there are three faults: the later valid cognition becomes meaningless, the earlier valid cognition is not a valid cognition, and inference can also be divided into two. The first point is that the earlier valid cognition drawn out by the earlier valid cognition...
