It is not to clarify the unknown meaning, but because the forms, etc., that are grasped separately themselves show the appearance, so it is said. Acharya Dharmakirti, in the Pramāṇavārttika, says that because these enter after completely determining the meaning, there is no deception in the act of meaning. The non-deception indicated by these three words is considered to be the characteristic of a valid cognition that possesses three dharmas. These three dharmas are: the distinction of the entity, the ability to obtain the meaning; the distinction of the object, not obtaining any meaning that is grasped or not grasped, but obtaining the object of entry that is completely determined; the distinction of the function, the ability to abide in the function of completely cutting off the meaning. Among these, the distinction of the entity cuts off the grasping of things as the characteristic of a valid cognition; the distinction of the object cuts off the impossible; the distinction of the function cuts off the over-pervasive, and supplements the cutting off of the non-pervasive. The realization of the true meaning is the function of a valid cognition, not the characteristic, so it is said. Those who follow the Brahmins believe that the realization of the true meaning has three dharmas, that is, for the meaning that was not previously realized, the elimination of superimposition by means of a non-erroneous mode of apprehension. This also has three distinctions: the distinction of the entity is merely the elimination of the superimposition of the opposite side, not that the valid cognition actually performs refutation and establishment. The distinction of the object is the meaning that was not previously realized, that is, for the kinds that do not distinguish place, time, and appearance, the realization of what was not previously realized. The distinction of the mode of apprehension is not being confused about the meaning that one has not superimposed oneself. The three distinctions also have three functions: the function of the distinction of the entity, the function of eliminating superimposition, with one established, one does not prevent; the function of the distinction of the object, the function of what was not previously realized, with one established, one does not establish; the function of the distinction of the mode of apprehension, the function of not being confused about the meaning, with one established, it is not contradictory to one established, thus it is explained in detail. Thus, among the four systems, the first is unreasonable, because the valid cognition is the two different meanings that are to be signified, because it is to be signified by two natures that are different in meaning. If it is said that the valid cognition that establishes for the sake of others is also the two different meanings that are to be signified, because it is to be signified by two natures that are different in meaning, then,

Because the reasoning is not established. From the perspective of the path of reasoning, it is from the perspective of eliminating non-common attributes that the aspects of the definition are briefly shown. In the Compendium, it is only from the perspective of eliminating wrong conceptions that the aspects of the definition are extensively explained. Because the essence of the meaning is the same. For example, direct perception, taking the elimination of non-common attributes as the definition, establishes it as non-deceptive consciousness, and from the perspective of eliminating wrong conceptions, adding non-conceptual to it, but the essence of the meaning is the same. If it is said that the non-deceptive consciousness and the unknown meaning are clear, and the essence of the meaning is also the same, so there is no fault. Then, the unknown meaning is clear, it is not a definition other than the non-deceptive consciousness, because it is not the essence of the meaning other than that. If you admit it, it contradicts "it is another second definition." The previous explanation of the Ornament is also unreasonable, because when establishing the definition of the general characteristic of valid cognition, it is irrelevant to divide it into two types, ultimate valid cognition and conventional valid cognition, to establish the definition. In addition, if you ask what the definition of the general characteristic of valid cognition is, the answer is to divide it into two types, direct perception and inference, and establishing the definition of those two also becomes the reason for establishing the definition of the general characteristic of valid cognition. Furthermore, in this Commentary on Valid Cognition, there is no scripture that actually shows the definition of the general characteristic of valid cognition, because neither the previous nor the later scriptures have shown the definition of the general characteristic of valid cognition. If the second explanation is like what most Tibetans think is the view of that commentary, it is unreasonable, because there is the sentence "Because of grasping the object, it is conventional, not allowed," and because there is the fault of repeating the two, unknown meaning is clear. However, the view of that commentary, whether it is the former or the latter, each is a complete definition, because the essence of the meaning of those two is the same. Then, if the later definition has the fault of becoming a decisive consciousness valid cognition, what is used to prevent it? Because it appears to be the meaning of using the previous reasoning to prevent it, if that is the case, it is very reasonable. It will be explained below in the case of one's own system. The system of Dharma Victory is also unreasonable, because if the phrase established as the definition has the ability to cut off non-pervasiveness, then it is meaningless to supplement the cutting off of non-pervasiveness from other places, and if it does not, then the definition will become flawed. Realizing the true meaning is the function of valid cognition, not the definition.
