Explanation of the Nature of Valid Cognition (Pramana) Explanation of the Nature of Valid Cognition (Pramana) Secondly, to ascertain the nature of valid cognition (pramana), there are two: the classification of definitions and the determination of the meaning of each defined object. Firstly, there are three: in general, the nature of definition, defined object, and basis; in particular, to ascertain the definition of valid cognition (pramana); to determine the meaning defined by the definition. Firstly, there are two: proving that knowable objects are pervaded by three properties; ascertaining the nature of the three pervading properties. The first is: all knowable objects are pervaded by definition, defined object, and basis, because when any aspect of a knowable object appears in the mind, it has a form that is not common with others, and because sound and concept are not confused, it can be grasped, and it also appears as having a basis. Secondly, there are four: the classification of definition, the classification of defined object, the classification of basis, and the way of defining each in relation to the definition. Firstly, there are three: establishing the definition that does not require a definition, refuting the view that a definition does not need a definition, and classifying the errors that need to be excluded. Firstly, there are two: refutation and establishment, the first is: some ancient scholars say that a definition does not need another definition, because it is the negation of meaning and a real entity, and if it is needed, it will lead to infinity. Others say that a definition also has two aspects: the meaning of the definition and the term. The meaning does not need another definition, but the meaning is taken as the basis, and in order to prove that it is the term of the definition, it is necessary to establish the definition, and the reason that it is a real entity is not established. Some people think that it is okay to need it in meaning, for example, the definition of the second term, such as the term cow needs to include horns, etc. The term cow is the definition of the second term, because it is the object of grasping of the second term. Similarly, they also think that the defined object also has other defined objects. If the meaning of the definition has an end, but the term will become infinite, then this is acceptable, for example, when proving that there is fire where there is smoke, taking smoke as a sign, when using the complete three aspects as a sign to indicate that smoke is the reason, in order to prove that the first complete three aspects is the reason, the second complete three aspects is established, etc., which is infinite.

Oh, they say so. But this is not reasonable. When the reason for establishment (mtha nyid) is not certain, is the result of what is to be established ('bras bu) - the signified (mtshon bya) certain or uncertain? If, as in the first case, the signified can be understood even without a definition (mtshan nyid), then the definition becomes unnecessary. If, as in the latter case, it is impossible to determine the latter of infinite definitions, then ultimately the fundamental definition becomes uncertain, and therefore the signified also becomes uncertain. In particular, to refute the claim that terms (tha snyad) are considered definitions, some say: If the term "cow" itself does not have an object of attachment that is not confused by sound concepts, then it will be beyond knowledge and expression. If it exists, then it itself is the second term, so the term "cow" is the definition of the second term, and the second term is the definition of the third term, and so on, the terms are infinite. Oh, then the definition of a tree - a branch will also become infinite. Because the branch that is considered the definition of a tree, if there is no second branch, then the branch will not be a tree; if it exists, then it also needs a third and fourth, and so on. The second case is: A clever opponent can establish a term simply by seeing the opposite of the meaning of reason (gtan tshigs) and definition, so there is no need to establish a sign (rtags) for establishing the term. For a foolish opponent, it is necessary to establish these definitions as signs in order to establish the term; for a very foolish person, it may be necessary to explain the nature of each of the three modes, and the meaning of tumor, recess, wrinkle, the accumulation of flesh on the neck, and the drooping of skin on the throat, and so on. Those who do not understand even by saying this much are not the object of establishing terms. Oh, then how to establish terms for foolish people? When establishing the term "smoke" as a reason, there are two types: the term for a general reason and the term for a reason that specifically belongs to this argument. The first is: Whatever possesses the three modes is necessarily a correct reason, such as being created. Smoke also possesses the three modes, so it is established. Oh, then what is the reason why something that possesses the three modes in this way is a reason? Whatever possesses the three modes is given the name of a correct reason, just as a tree is given to something with branches, it is established simply by remembering the name. It is also easy to understand applying the name to something that belongs to this argument.
