Regarding the necessity of ascertaining validity itself, there are two aspects: determining its definition and how it dispels superimpositions. The first aspect has three parts: refuting others' assertions, establishing one's own system, and refuting arguments against it. Concerning the first aspect, Dharmakirti explained 'undeceptive knowledge' and 'clarity of the unknown' as the definition of validity. In response, both Deva and Shakya considered each of these to be a complete definition of validity, and they regarded them as distinct in meaning. As stated in Deva's commentary, 'Thus, it has been explained that non-deception is the definition of validity.' 'Clarity of the unknown is also another definition.' In its explanation, it says, 'The term 'another definition' is because people judge it, considering this to be one and the other to be a different second.' Therefore, it is said. Of the two explanations by the Ornament Maker (Śāntarakṣita), the first is: Of the two, ultimate validity and conventional validity, the former is: the experience of non-dual awareness by noble beings, each experiencing clarity in their own self-cognizant wisdom. Its definition is 'clarity of the unknown,' not 'non-deception,' because the meaning of analysis is not obtained. The latter is: that which exists in the continuum of ordinary beings, appearing as the duality of grasper and grasped, and is suitable for conventional designation. Its definition is 'non-deceptive knowledge,' because the meaning of ascertainment is obtained. In the commentary on the Ornament, it says, 'Here, the word 'meaning' expresses the ultimate truth; the phrase 'clarity of the unknown' means clarifying the ultimate truth.' And it says, 'This is the definition of ultimate validity, while the former is conventional.' In the auto-commentary of the Treaury of Logic, it is said that the definition of conventional validity is understood to be the collection of 'non-deception' and 'clarity of the unknown.' The second explanation is: In establishing 'non-deception' as the definition of validity, in order to avoid the fault of decisional cognition also becoming valid, 'clarity of the unknown' is stated, thus it is considered that both together indicate one complete definition. As it says in the Ornament, 'Or, this is the definition of validity. Because it clarifies, it is a clarifier, that is, the knowledge that clarifies the unknown is validity.' Conventional knowledge is
