When establishing, the objects of both are only the self-character, but in the way of understanding the object, there are two ways: the way of direct understanding and the way of indirect understanding. Among them, the consciousness that understands directly is direct perception, and its object is the self-character; the consciousness that understands indirectly is inference, and its object is the general character. Because of this, it is said, "Because of its function." And so on. Secondly, in (two), there are two types: the absence of harm from a small number and the absence of harm from a large number. Among them, the first is: The materialists say: It is not reasonable to establish the determination of the number of direct perception and inference in measurement, because measurement is determined only by direct perception, because inference is not measurement. In order to refute their (materialists') view, it is not clearly stated in this (present) treatise, but the teacher believes that in order to refute different numbers, both large and small numbers must be refuted, so it is supplemented here: "The non-existent is not measurable, if it is said to be unique, I also agree." And so on. The second is: The Vaisheshikas and the Naiyayikas say: It is not reasonable to establish the determination of two numbers in measurement, because the consciousness that knows that color is impermanent is measurement, but it is not included in the two of direct perception and inference. In order to refute their (Vaisheshikas and Naiyayikas') statement, (the Sutra) says: "Therefore, it is a definite measure, and the rest are non-existent." Moreover, the meaning of it is also said here: "This fault is not too much." And so on. The Samkhyas believe that the consciousness of recognition is the third aggregate that is not included in the two measurements. In order to refute them (Samkhyas), (the Sutra) says: "Repeatedly knowing is also non-existent, like memory and so on becoming infinite." Moreover, the meaning of it is also said here: "Because each moment is different." And so on. Secondly, in establishing different numbers, there is no proof and there is harm. Among them, there are two types: refuting different numbers in measurement and refuting measurement in different numbers. Among them, the first is: The materialists establish that measurement is only direct perception because inference is not measurement. For this, there are two types: harm by acceptance and harm by factual reasoning. Among them, the first is: In the Pramanavarttika, it is said: "Establishing measurement and one difference, in order to make others know the mind, and also to refute others, the remaining measurement is definitely existent." The second is: Refutation

Since it is necessary to acknowledge that severing the root of establishment is contradictory and related, the mind that ascertains it is established as inference, just as it is said in the scriptures: If direct perception is meaningless, then non-arising is valid cognition. Second, there are four: refuting validity cognition based on sound, refuting validity cognition that ascertains color as impermanent, refuting validity cognition of recognition, and comparing these reasons to other situations. First, if validity cognition arising from sound is a third type of validity cognition not included in the two types of validity cognition, then does it infer the meaning to be expressed from the sign of the expressive word, or does it infer the intention of the motivation? If it is the former, then it is impossible to be valid cognition, because there is no non-arising relationship between the expressive word and the meaning to be expressed, because the words of ordinary people are wrong, the words of special people are difficult to understand, and there are no words that are not made by people. As the saying goes, sounds exist simultaneously with things, and so on. If it is the latter, then the reason not included in direct perception and inference is not established, because it is inference. So, what is the basis for its reason? For example, the word "vase" has the nature of dharma, the motivation of the desire to express precedes it, because it is an expressive word. As the saying goes, it also arises from sound in order to show obvious intention, and these show the speaker's intention. On this, Master Dharmakirti believes that words free from the five states of madness, sleep, habit, repetition, and error are necessary, but it is necessary to prove the special intention of expressing the meaning, and it is not necessary to prove only the motivation. Some people think that there is no motivation for the words of the omniscient, so it is uncertain, which is unreasonable, because for them, there is also the motivation of compassion, so motivation is not universally present in concepts. As the Shastra says: However, for those who are free from attachment, the reason for speaking is not non-existent, because speaking is for the benefit of others. With the thought of accomplishing its benefit, wanting to express it, this itself is the nature of compassion, therefore, it is shown by the nature of compassion. It is also said in the Ornament of Sutras: Meaning
