These are the meanings of the respective words. Firstly, some Tibetans say that valid cognition is the basis of classification, but correct knowledge is not the basis of classification, because decisive knowledge and conceptual thought are also correct knowledge, so there is the fault of the basis of classification being too broad. This is not reasonable, because correct knowledge is precluded from what is not valid cognition. Of the valid cognition that appears to accomplish a purpose, according to the teacher Dharmakirti, and the valid cognition that thoroughly engages in the ability to accomplish a purpose, the former is like fire appearing to cook and burn, and is the direct cause of accomplishing the benefit of a person, while the latter is like fire and water, etc., which merely appear, and are the indirect cause of accomplishing the benefit of a person. The former is not the basis of classification, because it is not deceptive, and one has already ascertained it oneself, so it is not an object to be analyzed in treatises, and it is only ascertained by direct perception, so there is no direct perception or inference. Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that only the latter is the basis of classification, because if the general cannot be the basis of classification, and it is necessary to separate the particulars to be the basis of classification, then all the classifications of direct perception, etc., would also need to be like that, so it would be too excessive. The self-system considers that valid cognition and correct knowledge are the same in meaning, only different in name, so both can be the basis of classification, because it says here: Because there are two objects to be measured, there are two valid cognitions. And in the Pramāṇavārttika it says: Correct knowledge is of two kinds, namely direct perception and inference, so it has been said that correct knowledge is the basis of classification. Secondly, there are direct perception and inference. Thirdly, in terms of the way of understanding the object to be measured, there are two ways: the way of understanding based on experience, and the way of understanding based on signs, or there are two ways: the way of understanding from one's own nature, and the way of understanding from the nature of others. The self-character of direct perception is understood from one's own nature. In this regard, object-cognizing direct perception understands the object's self-character from its own nature, and its own nature is the image indicated by the object's self-character, while self-cognizing direct perception understands the self-character of knowledge from its own nature, and its own nature is the self-character of knowledge itself. Inference understands the self-character from the nature of others, and the nature of others is the image of the object appearing to inference, the object

I am attached to names, and the reason for establishing them as the nature of others is that they are not established from the aspect of things themselves, but appear due to the influence of other habitual tendencies. The fourth question is: Are direct perception and inference different substances, like a vase and woolen cloth? Or are they different by negating sameness, like things and non-things? Or are they different in aspects while being the same in essence, like being made and impermanent? Or are they different in name, like the moon and cool rays? If asked like that. Jñānaśrī says: They are different by negating sameness. Because direct perception is the knowing part of experience, it is a thing. And inference is the part of the defilement of conceptual thought, because the object to be grasped is not a thing, therefore the inference that measures it is also not a thing. Saying this is unreasonable, because both are things. The object to be grasped by inference is an illusion from the aspect of not being a thing, and the illusion itself is a thing. Some people think that relying on one object is the same, but this is also unreasonable, because conceptual and non-conceptual are not the same object. Some people think that relying on different objects is different in nature, but this is also unreasonable, because inference in general is different in nature from direct perception, and if the particular self-awareness direct perception is different in nature, then it becomes not knowledge. Therefore, direct perception and inference are one in the nature of mind, because inference itself has the nature of direct perception. They are established as direct perception and inference depending on the object, such as the inference that knows there is fire on the mountain, it is inference in relation to the meaning of the collection of mountain and fire, and it is direct perception in relation to its own nature. If that inference becomes not inference by relying on the object, because it becomes direct perception by relying on the object. Also, if the particular self-awareness direct perception and nature are one, then it must be one with the nature of direct perception. That dharma, becomes different in nature from direct perception, because it is different in nature from sense direct perception. If asked like that, the first fault is not there, because relying on the object is different, meaning that when that inference becomes self-awareness direct perception to the inference, that inference relying on the object is not established as self-awareness direct perception, because at that time that inference is not established as the object of inference. The second fault is also not there, because the particular
