If it is the same entity as the tree's trunk (Tibetan: ག་ཤ་པ་), then it must be the same entity as the tree trunk (Tibetan: ཤིང་ཙམ་). If it is a different entity from the tree's trunk (Tibetan: ག་ཤ་པ་), then it is not necessarily a different entity from the tree trunk (Tibetan: ཤིང་ཙམ་). Fifth, some in our own school hold that valid cognition is definitively three: direct perception, inference, and scriptural authority. Master Chandrakirti, on top of that, definitively states four, including the valid cognition of analogy. Some outsiders, on top of that, hold many, such as implication and non-existent valid cognition. So, what is the reason for definitively stating two here, direct perception and inference? Because there is proof for definitively stating two and no harm, and there is no proof for holding other numbers and there is harm, of the four. The first is: In the sutra, it says, "Direct perception and inference are valid cognition, the two measure." Thus, it only speaks of the measure being definitively two as proof for valid cognition being definitively two. Here it says, "Because the measurable is two, valid cognition is two." To establish this, there are two: establishing the subject-property and establishing pervasion. First, the measurable is definitively two: self-characterized and general-characterized. From the perspective of result, there are two qualities: able to perform a function and unable to perform a function. From the perspective of its own essence, there are two qualities: similar and common, and dissimilar and uncommon. From the perspective of the object-possessor sound, there are two: being the actual object expressed by the expressing sound and not being so. From the perspective of the object-possessor consciousness, there are two: the appearing object of conceptual thought and the appearing object of non-conceptual consciousness. This is shown by "Because of being able to act and not being able to act," etc. So, what are the bases of the two, self-characterized and general-characterized? What is their essence like? What is the meaning of dividing them as different? These two truths are the bases, as stated by "The ultimate is what is able to perform a function," etc. The essence of the general-characterized is not substantial, and what is substantial is the self-characterized, as stated by "What is expressed is not that real," etc. The two, self-characterized and general-characterized, are divided from the perspective of how they apply to the single self-characterized, as stated by "One's own characteristic is one measurable," etc. Second, establishing pervasion is: if the measurable is definitively two, then valid cognition is definitively two is pervasive. Valid cognition measures the single self-characterized measurable.
