Regarding the three minds that appear but are not definite: the unclear mind, the untrusting mind, and the mind seized by the cause of delusion. The first is like the direct perception of blue apprehension in the continuum of direct vision, which appears but is not definite for the moment of blue. The second is like the eye consciousness apprehending form when thoughts are gathered inward. The third is like the eye consciousness apprehending fish scales when one mistakes fish scales for silver. Definition of determination: A cognition that accords with the meaning of what was previously understood without disappearing, and which contradicts the imputation of the opposite direction. It is divided into direct determination and inferential determination. The first is the second moment and onwards of the direct perception of blue apprehension. The second is like the ascertainment that arises after direct perception, and the recollection that arises after inference. Doubt and wrong knowledge are mostly similar, so they will be explained in the later section on one's own system. Second, refuting these, there are three: refuting mind, refuting appearing but not definite, and refuting determination. First, there are two: general refutation and specific refutation. First, there are three: refuting by imputation, being too extreme, and being the same as wrong. First, the mind that ascertains that sound is impermanent, does it rely on merely stating the reason or not? If it is like the second, then it is the subject, it follows that it is doubt. Because it is a thought that does not rely on either experience or reason, but only clings to the commitment. It is pervasive: because in the Pramāṇaviniścaya it says, "Because it is the cause of doubt that is unsuitable like an object." And it says, "From the words of the sect, it is seen that doubt arises about the meaning, but not certainty, so it is not an actual establishment." And in the Pramāṇavārttika it says, "Even with the word 'non-existence,' it does not contradict merely not having it. If one speaks of that kind of non-existence, then at that time it is understood as 'non-existence.'" Therefore. If it relies on reason, does it rely on a correct reason or a similar reason? If it is like the first, then it is the subject, it follows that it is valid. Because it is a cognition that relies on a correct reason and newly ascertains the hidden truth. If it is not pervasive, then inference also follows that it is not valid. Because of the reason for not being pervasive. If it is like the second, then it is the subject, non-conceptual, wrong conceptual, and doubt.

Therefore, besides (pramana), it should not become a non-pramanic consciousness, because it is a knowledge that relies on any of the three fallacious reasons. The second case is: if someone says that the reason that serves as the basis for mental judgment is not any of the three fallacious reasons, then there should be a fourth fallacious reason, because the reason that serves as its basis is a fallacious reason that is not any of the three fallacious reasons. If someone says that this is not established, because the reason that serves as its basis is a correct reason, then there should be a third pramana, because it is a non-inferential pramana. The third case is: without relying on a sign, the ascertainment that the object to be measured, which is hidden, does not conform to reality, should become mental judgment; without relying on a sign, what kind of mental judgment is the ascertainment that the object to be measured, which is hidden, conforms to reality? Because the reason is the same. If you accept this, it contradicts the fundamental definition. Someone says that this is not pervasive, because without relying on a sign, the ascertainment that the object to be measured, which is hidden, does not conform to reality, is included in delusion. Then, the other one is also equally included in pramana, so it will become non-mental judgment. The second part is: refuting mental judgment without reason; refuting mental judgment with inverted reason; refuting that knowledge based on scripture is mental judgment, divided into three. The first case is: the thought that there is water in the old well of the ancestors should not become mental judgment without reason, because it takes seeing the previous drawing of water, etc., as a reason. The second case is: for example, taking sound to be impermanent from the sign of what is to be heard, which is the uncommon uncertain; for example, taking sound to be impermanent from the sign of what is to be measured, which is the real uncertain; for example, taking the son of Devadatta, who is facing outwards, to be blue from the sign of the son of Devadatta, all knowledge that relies on the correct excess should become mental judgment, because mental judgment with inverted reason is mental judgment. Taking sound to be impermanent from the sign of what is taken by eye consciousness should also become mental judgment, because the reason is the same as the previous one. If you accept both, it contradicts what the teacher said: "Doubt that has no power over the party, and ascertainment of wanting what is not wanted."
