There are two ways to summarize: first, examining whether the object to be measured is pervaded by its own characteristic; and second, explaining the meaning of the object to be measured as being solely its own characteristic. The first is: Some say that the object to be measured is pervaded by its own characteristic, that is, its own nature is the object to be measured. Because what does not exist is not the object to be measured. If it is said to be "one," I also agree. As it is said in the *Treasury of Reasoning*: "The object to be measured is only its own characteristic." Therefore, they say so. To refute this, there are two types: scriptural and logical. The first is: "Direct perception and subsequent inference are valid cognitions; the two characteristics are the objects to be measured." And "Since there are two objects to be measured, there are two valid cognitions," thus defining the number of objects to be measured as two. Also, in the *Commentary on Valid Cognition*: "That which has an object of reality is a valid cognition, because the characteristic of a valid cognition is non-deception. Therefore, since this also has the characteristic of a valid cognition, non-existence is also an object to be measured." This contradicts the above statement. The second has three faults: first, it entails that there is no valid cognition that realizes non-existence; second, it entails that the uncertain cause contradicts the first; and third, it entails that the negation by reason is a non-measuring wisdom. The first is: It entails that there is no valid cognition that realizes non-existence, because that is not an object to be measured. If you accept this, then the inference that establishes sound as impermanent by the reason of being produced, its opposite pervasion, that is, the harm that establishes permanence, the inference on which it relies would not exist. The second is: The object to be measured becomes a contradictory reason for establishing sound as permanent, because whatever aspect of its subject property is established, if it is an object to be measured, it must be impermanent. The third is: From the reason of one and many, the inference that realizes appearance as devoid of inherent existence, on the appearance, merely negating the true non-affirming negation, becomes a non-measuring wisdom. Because that is not a valid cognition for it. It cannot be accepted, because from the reason of one and many, the reason for establishing appearance as devoid of inherent existence is correct. Therefore, in our own system, if it is an object to be measured, it is not pervaded by its own characteristic, because in the scriptures, it is often stated that the object to be measured is defined as two: its own characteristic and the general characteristic, and the general characteristic is not an object to be measured, and the tenet that inference is not a valid cognition is the view of the Materialists, which has been refuted by Dharmakirti. The second is: Then, if it is thought that "one's own characteristic is the object to be measured," etc., what is the meaning of the object to be measured being solely its own characteristic? Generally speaking, for the treatises of logic,
