Because there are five types of direct perception, such as eye consciousness and clairvoyance, it is not possible to fix a larger number. Therefore, this is established according to need. It is said that the Carvakas do not accept sense direct perception as valid cognition, those without pierced ears do not accept mental direct perception as valid cognition, and the Vaisheshikas and Sautrantikas do not accept self-awareness, and the Samkhyas do not accept yogic direct perception. It is said that the division into four is to refute these four wrong views, but this is not reasonable. If mental direct perception is not valid cognition, it is not possible to refute the wrong view of those who think like those without pierced ears. Eye consciousness and clairvoyance are included in either self-awareness direct perception or yogic direct perception. Some say, "The four direct perceptions are the view of the Sutrantikas, the Vaibhashikas have three, and the Vijnanavadins have two." To divide into four according to the literal meaning is not the view of the Vaibhashikas, because they do not accept self-awareness direct perception. It is not the view of the Vijnanavadins, because they do not accept sense direct perception and mental direct perception. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that this is only the view of the Sutrantikas. In the *Object Examination*, the Vijnanavadins explain the three conditions of sense direct perception, so it is necessary to accept sense direct perception. And the *Commentary on the Treasury of Reasoning* itself says that if you accept sense direct perception, you must accept mental direct perception. Some say that the meaning of that text refers to direct perception that is not mistaken about the object of appearance. This statement is also unreasonable, because for the two direct perceptions of sense and mind, the Vijnanavadins must also accept that they are not mistaken about the object that appears to any direct perception. So, what is the intention of this text? If we speak from the point of view of convention, even if the Vijnanavadins accept that the two direct perceptions of sense and mind are valid cognition for external objects, the definite number mentioned here refers to the examination of the ultimate reality. At that time, it is impossible for the two direct perceptions of sense and mind to become valid cognition for external objects, so only self-awareness direct perception can become its own nature. Therefore, the first three direct perceptions are the same from the point of view of nature, and also the same from the point of view of object, so they are considered self-awareness direct perception. Yogic direct perception is valid cognition for the nature of phenomena, so it is the same in nature as self-awareness direct perception, but different from the point of view of object. Sutra

According to the Vaibhashika school, the four types of direct perception are also distinguished from the perspective of the object of perception, namely, self-awareness direct perception is consciousness, sense direct perception is external objects, mental direct perception is external objects that are different from these external objects, and yogic direct perception is to regard the true meaning as valid, which is from the perspective of reality. As it is said in the "Commentary on the Compendium of Logic": The determination of the number of direct perceptions is that when relying on the Sautrantika school and acknowledging external objects, it is divided into four from the perspective of the object of perception. In the sutra it is said: Monks, the consciousness of form is of two kinds, namely, eye and mind. This is the intention of the sutra. Furthermore, the Specific Speakers do not admit self-awareness, so there are three direct perceptions. According to the Yogacara school, it is impossible to have anything other than self-awareness and yogic direct perception, which is the view of the glorious Dignaga. In this way, when measuring the two results, when establishing the valid result of sense consciousness, it is said that self-awareness is the result. In the "Object Analysis" it says: The cause of the sense direct perception of the Yogacara own school. In the "Root Commentary on the Compendium of Logic" it says: When dividing direct perception into four from the perspective of the object of perception, it is necessary to admit external objects, so it is said that it is only the doctrine of the Sautrantika school, and these can be understood as one key point, so at the beginning of the second verse of the "Root Compendium of Logic", if you can add the phrase "from the perspective of the object of perception", you will understand that all the key points can be naturally liberated. Some people say: The four direct perceptions are the Sautrantika school, the Specific Speakers are three, and the Yogacara is two. This statement is unreasonable, because there is no mental direct perception in the doctrine of the Specific Speakers, because it is not mentioned in any part of the treatises such as the Abhidharmakosha. It cannot be established by reasoning either, because it needs to be established by scriptural authority. It is also unreasonable for the Yogacara to think that sense direct perception and mental direct perception are not valid, if so, then they must think that there is no difference between the stable sense consciousness of habit and the unstable sense consciousness of habit in whether they are valid, but the "Pramanavarttika" says that there is a difference between the two in whether they are valid, because even the unskilled see that words are unreliable because of the fault of not connecting the habit of near affliction, so one is said to be invalid, and the other is a stable habit.
