A Clear Exposition of the Difficult Points in the Treasury of Reasoning: Seven Treatises. A Clear Exposition of the Difficult Points in the Treasury of Reasoning: Seven Treatises. Explaining the System of Logic. The Sun Illuminating the Intent of the Seven Treatises Explaining the Difficult Points of Pramana. Called "The Drum Sound Arising from the Benefit of Others in Correct Reasoning, the Mirror for Viewing the Form of the Treasury of Reasoning." I respectfully prostrate to the Lama and the supreme deity, the Protector Manjushri. With the combination of the sword of wisdom and the bow and arrow, Having destroyed all the battlefields of ignorance and delusion, Having well-established the kingdom of correct view, May that supreme deity bless my mind. Bearing the burden of the stainless doctrine, On the heads of arrogant opponents and heretics, The supreme elephant who skillfully abandons the habit of pride, I respectfully bow to the founder of reasoning. A mere fraction of the light of Samantabhadra, When it dawns in the minds of fortunate beings in Jambudvipa, Is called Dharmakirti, I bow to him who waves the banner of fame. To him who has perfectly spoken the inexhaustible treasure of reasoning, And who has opened it with unobstructed wisdom, Without rival in this entire earth, I respectfully prostrate to the venerable Sakyapa. The speech of the Lama Manjushri is a wish-fulfilling jewel, Adorned at the peak with the victory banner of explanation and accomplishment, Appearing among the omniscient Lamas, I also respectfully prostrate to the assembly of wonderful lineages. Having well-established the Teacher and the Teachings as valid, The treatises of Dignaga, Dharmakirti, and Victorious over Opponents, Through the power of past habituation and the supreme deity, The unerring key points of the meaning, just as they are, As opened by the Panchen Lama, the Lama of beings, Following after him, with my own intellect, Having cut through the tangled web of Tibetan summaries, I will bestow the profound essence of definitive meaning. Here, may the hosts of ocean-like Dharma protectors, Accomplish the activity of pacifying outer and inner obstacles. May the gods who delight in the teachings dance, And scatter flowers and offer auspicious words. Those who desire to attain the state of omniscience must become learned in the five sciences, as it is said: If one does not strive in the five sciences, Even the supreme Buddha will not become omniscient. Therefore,

Because (it is) said: In order to cut off the doubts of others and then accept (them), in order to understand everything for oneself, therefore one should be diligent in this. Thus, among the five sciences, here, in explaining the system of logic, there are three topics: identifying the treatises on logic, the manner in which it was founded, and the explanation of the particularly excellent system. First, it is said that initially, the Arhat Tamer of Passions created the "Door of Discourse," and after that, the teacher Vasubandhu composed the "Methods of Argumentation." If someone thinks: In the Pramāṇasūtra it says, "The Methods of Argumentation were not created by the teacher, it is definitely considered to be meaningless," is this not correct? This is because it was composed when one was previously abiding in the Vaibhāṣika school and the power of intelligence was not complete. Later, when one was abiding in the Cittamātra school and the power of intelligence was complete, (Vasubandhu) said in the commentary that he himself did not accept the meaning of what was said. The teacher Vasubandhu had four disciples who were more learned than himself, among whom Dharmakīrti, who was known to be more learned than himself in the field of Pramāṇa, initially composed one hundred and eight scattered treatises such as the "Examination of the Object of Cognition." Among these, the ones translated into Tibetan are: "Explanation of the Differentiation of Wind" along with its commentary, "Examination of the Object of Cognition" along with its commentary, "Examination of the Three Times," "Entering into Reasoning," and "The Wheel of the Nine Aspects of the Probandum." Later, the topics of these treatises were collected into one, and the "Compendium on Valid Cognition" was composed, possessing six chapters: Perception, Inference for Oneself, Inference for Others, Examination of Examples and Pseudo-Examples, Examination of Exclusion of Others, and Examination of Contradictory Determination. The Lord Mañjughoṣa prophesied that this treatise would become the single eye of all treatises in later times. Among the many commentaries that did not appear, Dharmakīrti, the emanation of Samantabhadra, who heard the system of Dignāga from the teacher Īśvarasena, composed the "Commentary on Valid Cognition," possessing four chapters, with his own commentary of four thousand five hundred verses on the first chapter, as well as the "Ascertainment of Valid Cognition" along with its own commentary, the "Drop of Reasoning," the "Drop of Logic," the "Examination of Relation" along with its own commentary, "Establishment of Other Continuums," and "Logic of Debate."
