If a sense faculty is incomplete, sense consciousness will not arise, which proves the existence of that capacity. That capacity also does not go beyond the category of either matter or consciousness, therefore it should not be considered consciousness. If it were sense consciousness, it would have existed before the arising of sense consciousness, which would lead to endlessness. If it were mind consciousness, then it would not need to rely on these sense bases. Therefore, since it is established as matter, it is only acknowledged as having form. Things like rabbit horn flowers, etc., cannot be proven by reasoning for the time being, therefore, the Sutra followers who follow reasoning do not acknowledge this, which is the key point. The second point is that both Sutra and Mind-Only schools agree that self-nature is self-cognizing direct perception. However, the Sutra school believes that the direct perception of the senses must be established in dependence on external objects, so it is considered a consciousness of other-cognition. The Mind-Only school believes that objects other than oneself are not valid measures, so it is considered self-cognition. Therefore, since there is no other-cognition, self-cognition is considered the result. It's like that. The third point is that in the Compendium on Valid Cognition, it says: "Direct perception is free from conceptualization that combines names and categories, etc." This is just a commitment. In this Commentary on Valid Cognition, if there is no cause for error, it is proven by direct perception; if there is a cause for error, it is proven by inference. In the latter, generally speaking, there are many reasonings, so it says: "Therefore, the intelligence born from the senses, all are objects with distinctions." That is to say, sense direct perception is a dharma, it is non-conceptual, because it is a consciousness in which its own characteristic clearly appears. The fourth point is that sense direct perception is a dharma, it is non-erroneous, because it is not that error is produced by a cause of error, but it is a consciousness in which its own characteristic from its own side bestows an image similar to itself. In the fourth point, there are two divisions: generally explaining sound and meaning, and the classification of the three conditions that arise from that. The first is, although sense direct perception equally arises from all three conditions, why is it not named from the perspective of the objective condition and the immediately preceding condition, but is generally named sense direct perception from the perspective of the dominant condition, and specifically named eye consciousness, etc.? Generally speaking, the necessity of using conceptual terms is for the purpose of easily understanding that meaning at the time of naming. Therefore, using the term sense direct perception from the perspective of the dominant condition makes it easier to understand direct perception

The first of the four is easy to understand, because the tangible sense object is the uncommon dominant condition for the first of the four manifest cognitions. For example, a drum is called a drum sound because the drum is the uncommon cause of the drum sound, and a barley seed is called a barley sprout because it is the uncommon cause of the barley sprout. If explained in terms of the objective condition and the immediately preceding condition, the first of the four manifest cognitions cannot be easily understood, because form is the common objective condition for both visual sense perception and mental perception, and consciousness is the common immediately preceding condition for all five sense consciousnesses. For example, just as one cannot understand the sound of a drum from the sound of a stick, nor can one understand the uncommon dominant condition of a barley sprout from a sprout of water and fertilizer. Likewise, it is said in the Summary: "In short, because of the uncommon cause, its name is established by the sense." In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: "Because the meaning of understanding is seen." And so on, three verses. In the Treatise on Reasoning, it says: "Because the sense is the uncommon cause, it is sense consciousness, like the sound of a drum." Thus it is said. The second has two parts: the general characteristics of the three conditions and the individual characteristics of the three conditions. The first has three parts: the way it is explained in other treatises, an analysis of the master's own view, and an analysis of whether there is an objective condition for erroneous sense consciousness. The first is: As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The agent, the co-emergent, the similar, the constant, the pervasive, and the fully ripened, are said to be the six causes." Thus, the six causes. In the Root Wisdom Treatise, when expressing the views of the proponents of reality, it says: "There are four conditions: cause, object, immediately preceding, and dominant. There is no fifth condition." Thus, it is said that the four conditions give rise to the result. Among them, the causal condition is the other five causes besides the agent cause. The immediately preceding condition is: the present continuum of mind and mental factors, which is not interrupted. The objective condition is: all phenomena. The dominant condition is: established as the agent cause. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The cause is called the five causes, mind and mental factors that arise, not the last similar"
