It is because it becomes the objective external object of what truly exists. The 'Treasury of Reasoning' self-commentary states: Conch shells and trees, as well as two moons, etc., are also self-characterized objects, and erroneous knowledge arises from defective faculties, which is the meaning of what is said. Secondly, there are three parts. First, similar co-emergent conditions have four aspects: the definition of what is expressed, the meaning of the word that is expressed, the function established by it, and the cutting off of doubts about the basis. For the first, some from other treatises say: The past when the root consciousness has ceased is a co-emergent condition, but here it is said that the present consciousness is a co-emergent condition, so there is a difference, which is not reasonable. In both the upper and lower 'Abhidharma', it is said that it has ceased, although it is said to have ceased, but the present consciousness is similar, and it is considered a co-emergent condition, which is the same meaning as here. Then, why is the difference in the word 'ceased' mentioned there, but not here? Because this and the tenets of both the upper and lower 'Abhidharma', if similarity is a co-emergent condition, then it is the same as arising before its own result. But in the tenets of the upper and lower 'Abhidharma', there is generally a simultaneous occurrence of cause and effect, so in order to distinguish it, the difference in the word 'ceased' is mentioned, but here, because in the manner that all causes are previously existent, merely because it is a cause, it is established that it arises before that result, so there is no need to mention the difference in the word 'ceased'. Therefore, the definition of similar co-emergent condition is: Any knowledge that, without being interrupted by other dharmas, mainly produces the clear awareness of the knowledge that is its own result. Some refute that the entering mind of the two meditative absorptions is not a similar co-emergent condition of the rising mind, because the two are interrupted by other dharmas. Their own tenets say: Any knowledge that, without being interrupted by other knowledge, mainly produces the experiential clear awareness of the knowledge that is its own result, which is unreasonable, as will be explained below. The second is: Because the two, cause and effect, are similar in knowing, it is similar; because it is not interrupted by other dharmas, it is co-emergent; because it produces, it is a condition. The Vaibhashikas say: Merely the previous knowledge acts as a co-emergent condition for all the corresponding dharmas that are its own result, so this is also the key point.

Because it appears, therefore, the few mental factors of the immediately preceding cause are able to generate many mental factors as the result. Third, generally speaking, just in terms of consciousness, there is experience and clarity, which is the trace left by the previous consciousness. Therefore, the part of experience and clarity on top of the sense consciousness, among those three causes, the similar immediately preceding cause leaves a trace, because it has its cause. Because other causes are not reasonable, because the other two causes are not themselves the objects of experience, therefore they cannot be the main generators of experience and clarity. Fourth, then, what is the similar immediately preceding cause of the arising mind in the five states of mindlessness, such as the two samadhis? Some say that the initial entering mind itself is, because there is an immediately preceding cause of the arising mind. Because there is no other cause besides that, because the other two causes are themselves material. Like the brothers Asanga, it is also unreasonable to consider the alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind, because according to this teacher's view, there is no alaya consciousness and afflicted mind other than the entering six consciousnesses. Because there is an unclear mind in that state, it is also unreasonable to consider it as such, because it is established from other traditions, one's own school takes wisdom as the guide, after seeing things, to others, holding on, if wisdom changes. As it is said, if there is mind, then its signs are verbal expression and bodily movement, etc., because there is such a fault. It also contradicts the scriptures, in the Twenty Verses it says: The consciousness of mind arises, always without thought and, the two samadhis and, mindless sleep and fainting except. Therefore, the meaning of immediately preceding also refers to the consciousness of one's own continuum not being interrupted by others, but not referring to not being interrupted by other dharmas. This is their view. That is unreasonable, the sense consciousness that arises immediately from the five states, as the subject, it is impossible for your three causes to gather at the same time. If any of your objective cause and dominant cause, you must be its direct cause. If your similar immediately preceding cause is that, you must not be its direct cause. If it is said that it is not established, then the entering mind of the five states is the arising mind of
