If it is a valid cognition understood by force, then what is it? Is it direct perception or inference? If it is the former, then is it sense direct perception or self-awareness direct perception? If it is the former, it is unreasonable, because it is impossible for a cognition to become a sense direct perception of its own essence. If it is the latter, then it is the subject, it is not a valid cognition understood by force, because it is the object of your appearance, because you are self-awareness direct perception of it. If it is inference, then the mind that understands there is fire on the mountain is the subject, that you yourself are the measurer of fire is hidden from you, because you are inference of it. If you accept, then your own mind becomes hidden from yourself. These and other infinite reasons should be understood from the "Self-Commentary on the Treasury of Reasoning." The second part is divided into two points: the distinction between negation and establishment of objects, and the way to prevent what is to be negated after understanding it with valid cognition. The first point is: here only the negation and establishment of the elimination aspect are explained, so there are two aspects of establishment: the object of elimination and the knowledge. The first has two: the object is and exists. The latter has two: the knowledge is and exists, a total of four. There are also two aspects of negation: the negation of the object of elimination and the negation of knowledge. The first has two: the object is not and does not exist. The latter has two: the knowledge is not and does not exist, a total of four. The second point is: the inference based on the reason for establishment, or the definite knowledge led by direct perception, establishes or establishes non-negation. For example, the definite knowledge led by direct perception that is free from the cause of confusion that grasps sound as permanent, when it is determined that sound is impermanent, it is said that sound is established as impermanent. If there is a cause of confusion, then later when it is determined from the reason, it is said that sound is established as impermanent. The inference based on the reason for negation, or the definite knowledge led by direct perception, establishes negation. For example, the debater, through the definite knowledge led by the self-awareness direct perception experienced by the root direct perception of mastering purity, when it is determined that there is no pot in a certain place, it is said that the pot is pure. Because the debater is ignorant, from the reason that the pot is not seen by valid cognition, when it is determined that there is no pot in a certain place, it is said that the pot is pure in a certain place where the pot is not seen by valid cognition. Then, what determines that happiness is suffering, and that the nature of form aggregate is sound aggregate, etc.?

If asked: What is negation? Answer: It is negated by the function of self-cognizant perception. Because the ascertainment brought about by the self-cognizant perception that experiences bliss, when it is determined that what is experienced is bliss, it is said that it negates that bliss is suffering. Also, when the eye consciousness that apprehends form arises, the ear consciousness that apprehends sound does not arise, then what prevents its existence? Answer: It is negated by the constant that does not see the result, i.e., ascertainment. Because there is no cause of confusion and no focus, therefore ascertainment does not arise. Because all the discriminations of that time must be transformed into the nature of ascertainment, but it has not been transformed. Otherwise, it would be a fault that two discriminations arise simultaneously. Also, in a place clean of a pot, what negates the existence of the pot? Answer: It is negated by the function of the self-cognizant perception that experiences the pure sense perception. Because such self-cognizant perception can bring out two ascertainments: this place is seen, the pot is not seen. In short, negation is not the removal of something that existed before, but rather, for something that did not exist before, recognizing that it does not exist is called negation. Moreover, negation does not exist outside of what is not seen by a valid cognition, because: Negation itself, at all times, is accomplished by not seeing. Thus it is said. Third, if it is said: If there is no perception and no understanding of force, then it contradicts what the teacher said, that in some parts of the treatise, it is understood by force or understood by meaning. Answer: There is no fault. This refers to the arising of sudden inference from the function of perception or from the habituation of the three modes. As it is said in the Pramāṇaviniścaya: All things that are not established by themselves, because they are related to themselves, can establish, are not deceptive, and depend on others. A valid cognition that is not perception is not other than inference. Thus it is said. Not deceiving, not understanding, meaning clear, meaning opposite. Essence, perception, inference, not deceiving in both. From self and other, both determined and understood, from the function of self-determination, making negation and establishment. This is the concluding verse. The general essence of valid cognition has been well explained. // // Explanation of Perception. Second, to determine the meaning of each essence, there are two: perception and inference. First, there are three.
